My gym trains against pulling guard even in competition unless the situation calls for it and it’s absolutely necessary. But yeah, In a self defense situation. Pulling guard would be horrendous. My coach always says
“If someone broke in your house with the intent on hurting your family and you walk in what are you going to do? pull guard and start butt scooting across the living room? Your going to get stomped out” very blunt and even more true. A lot of the material taught in order to get your blue belt from my gym is basic self-defense. Headlock, knife defense, blocking strikes, etc...

My BJJ gym had a seminar yesterday by UFC fighter Alan Belcher but I had to miss it. :(

Does anyone train grip strength for BJJ and if so, how?

I saw a company makes an attachment for cable weight machines that is a gi sleeve/collar to work on your grip. It attaches to dumbbells as well. But it’s $60.

    Pull ups with your gi
Throw jacket over a pull-up bar and use that as your grip.
    I actually never do that.
Do you use a pistol grip or cats paw?
The latter is a lot easier to maintain without a lot of strength

    +1 on the gi pull-ups.
Also rock climbing is a good extra curricular activity that will help with grip strength. There is a rock wall place with various levels of difficulty that my girlfriend and I hit up occasionally. It’s pretty badass.

But I definitely wouldn’t spend money on any “sleeve” attachments. I think that’s a waste of money.

I had my first private lesson with the brown belt. Picked up a crap ton of details on the elbow escape and trap and roll when mounted. Also got good details on scissor sweep from the guard. Great stuff!!

In class we drilled the D’arce choke when your opponent goes into turtle. Pretty fun submission!

That transitions really well between anaconda and guillotine.
Fun to jump around between them all.

Surely there are YouTube videos on each of those. Once you know them you’ll see how you can put them together. Look up Firas Zahabi videos on YouTube, dude is a beast and gives great little details.

Lol, I thought that went without saying,
Personally I watch YouTube BJJ stuff all the time, BJJ and human anatomy books too.
Just like anything else (especially Crack) when you like something you tend to seek out more of it. Can’t be in class all the time.

Ya I think the Gracie academy was doing that, not sure if they still are. But it is complete bullshit.
One of the things I love about BJJ is that it is real. I like how your are tested every time you roll. You could never get away as some karate master that teaches katas but doesn't really know shit. Every day someone trying to leave class and say they tapped out a black belt. It's a big target on your back lol.

Yeah the online thing is absurd. I think the Gracie U even changed the way they do it. You send videos and it if they are good then you come test in person now. Even so, there's no replacement for having an in person instructor as you learn the moves.

When I get my blue belt I'll have to put it in my signature line. I'm not in any rush, I'm sure it will come eventually. I'll soon have that sweet 4th stripe on my white belt tho, lol

The whole self defense vs sport argument has always been dumb imo. Nobody in their right mind is gonna try to berimbolo someone in a street fight. They're gonna take you down, smash you into side control, and then take your back or mount. That's day one shit and still the ultimate goal in sport BJJ. You just have a different set of obstacles in order to get to the back or mount in sport which is where all the creative shit comes from. You get an untrained opponent and you aren't gonna need any of your sport stuff because you can just smash the fuck out of them

I learned some sweet details on triangle chokes during my last private lesson with the brown belt. My long ass legs will be an asset to me in my BJJ game!
