I wanted to re-post in this regional forum in the hopes that I can get a more local audience and response.

    Posted from another platform:

I feel fortunate to have found TacomaWorld and lucky to have access to such in-depth knowledge. It is almost enough to turn a nerd driving a truck into a real mechanic -- almost.

As background, I have a 2005 Tacoma. I was fortunate enough to buy it from a dealer on Long Island in good shape with low mileage (under 40K). It is a great truck that has had a few minor issues here and there (except for more recently when the AC compressor died, of course, right in the middle of a heat wave).

I am looking for a good mechanic in the greater New York City area. Someone who can do general maintenance and also help me as I add to and modify the truck over time -- preferably in a collaborative relationship.

We are in Westchester County (just north of NYC) and are willing to travel a short way (but I would prefer to avoid Long Island -- just because of the traffic and convenience).

Seems like most of the good Tacoma resources are all West ... ! Anyone have a good mechanic they would like to share?

    Hi there,

I am in Westchester County actually (other side of the river) but with the new bridge and all it is a fairly easy drive. Was hoping to find a place closer but will drive if I have to. Appreciate any and all recommendations.

I really appreciate you helping me. I can go to the Bronx -- some areas of the Bronx are closer than others but definitely willing to check out a good shop there.

I go to 2 places. Pro Auto for general maintenance and repairs, his name is Frank and he is at 460 Saw Mill River Rd, Yonkers, NY 10701, down the street from the plumbing supply and across the street from the Bee Line Bus Depot. Google says its S & J Service but he bought the place last year.

Other place is De Dona Enterprises for modifications to the truck, ask for Junior or Jimmy, they are on 560 Yonkers Ave, Yonkers, NY 10704. They are a little pricey but they will make sure the job is done right and they can do some pretty crazy mods. Place is always busy so try to get in early. I was in there a couple weeks ago and they were putting a corvette engine in a Wrangler.

If you go let them know I sent you.

Now thats what I want!!! LOL
I drive around in NYC regularly and its pretty much off road conditions on a lot of our roadways!
How does the BP-51 take to hard potholes? did you have to dial in a special setting?

I may go to OK4WD for th einstall too since they seem to have good reputation.

    Thanks again for the info!

This is all great info -- so thank you very much!

OK4WD looks amazing. It is about 1.5 hours from me but might be worth the drive. What I am really looking for is a lift expert to evaluate what I have on my truck (it was installed when I bought it), let me know if what I have is okay, check to see if any maintenance is needed or possibly replace the current lift with a better one. Also looking to build a relationship with a good shop for future work, maintenance and repairs.

I don't know Pro Auto -- but they are close so I may just drive over and check them out. I am certainly aware of De Dona and their work is amazing -- I went there once and didn't have the kind of friendly interaction I was looking for. Nothing bad, mind you. But it was pretty clear that my little project wasn't a priority. And, yes, they were super busy so that does say something.

The Toyota dealer that I recently had service at (Rivera) said they outsource some of their lift work to a company not too far from them. I got a number and will check them out -- if it pans out I will be happy to post their name here for everyone.

Great comments and resources. I have a feeling there are a lot more of us NY-based Tacoma folks than one would think.

    :)

In the interest of creating a greater New York resource list, I stumbled upon these folks in Danbury. I will give them a call but wanted to share with everyone. Not exactly local -- but not an unreasonable drive either.

Hey guys. Late to the party....
My suspension was installed by a member here @TNT4X4 in Edison NJ. He is running build and installation part of TNT Auto Parts business. Bunch of knowledge, but also busy as hell, so he doesn't spend much time on TW... You can try to pm him, or if something I can pm his #
    Good luck

    Bastek,

Super helpful. That is about an hour from me -- so not bad at all. Another good resource to put on the list to explore. "Bunch of knowledge" is always appreciated!
