    No, a Heat pump is a unit a split system the heat pump means the unit goes into reverse cycle for heating mode. Technically, a heat pump is a mechanical-compression cycle refrigeration system that can be reversed to either heat or cool a controlled space. Installation for this type of system typically consists of two parts: an indoor unit called an air handler and an outdoor unit called a condensing unit, but referred to as a heat pump. A compressor circulates refrigerant that absorbs and releases heat as it travels between the indoor and outdoor units.

    If you have a system that using gas the outside unit is just a straight condensing unit meaning cooling only and you will have electric heat strips or a gas furnace.

    I had a unit that the typical indoor and out door unit were all in one forgot what they called it. Most inefficient thing and always had problems.

    Ummmm like how new? I got mine brand new in 06 when I bought my house and redid the whole HVAC system. It was a trane apparently they discontinued that model a few yrs after they came out with it because it sucked so bad.
