Approching 50K what to do.......

I need a little input here. My 2012 DCSB is approaching 50,000 miles. It will probably hit it by years end or early next year and it is my daily driver. That is not many miles at all for a 2012 but the truck will be right at 8 years old. This may have already been covered in another thread. But this is more a time based question than mileage.

The truck has had

• All routine oil changes.
• Air filter routinely replaced
• All recommended tire rotations.
• The battery replaced (OEM died)
• Air pump and valves replaced the 2012 are notorious for. (On Toyota's dime)

No other issues or problems. 0 warranty work other than the pump and valves.
And the truck has a clean car fax.

What 8 year 50,000 mile preventive maintenance would you guys recommend? Truck looks as good as the day I bough it new, paint and interior wise. And I plan on keeping it for a very long time.
I was thinking possibly

• Spark plugs
• coolant flush
• replace all belts and hoses. (originals still look like new)

No need for brake work as the pads still look good.

Yesterday I greased the zerks on the drive shaft U joints as part of Preventive maintenance i think it recommends every 30k miles, The grease that came out was black and burnt. I used Bel Ray water proof grease in my gun too replace the old grease, I would recommend this if you haven't done it recently there's 5 zerk fittings, I'm at 64k miles with a 2014 dbl cab 4wd.

 

I'm in almost the exact position - 2012 v6 w/41k. I've had the exact same maintenance you've listed with the addition of:
-Greased driveshaft zerks every 5k
-Drained and filled ATF (pan only, not full drain/fill)
-Spark plugs (recommended every 30k - copper)
-Cleaned MAF and throttle body when I did the plugs
-Clean and lube brakes annually
-Replaced front/rear diff and transfer case oil

You may want to check the quality of your brake fluid. I believe there is a cheap tester you can buy that checks the fluid for water content. I'm going to use the turkey baster method to replace some of the fluid either at 50 or 60k.

 

Keep driving.

 

50k may be little soon for coolant and plugs. May want to change the diff fluid.

 

My local Toyota dealer has done every oil change . I'm unsure if my U joints have been greased or not as part of this service. I would say not.

 

I agree with most of the above statements. My list would be:

Tranny fluid - I flushed mine at 60k on my first truck and just drain and fills after. I plan to do the same on my current truck. But yours is 8 years old, couldn’t hurt to do it at 50k

Diff fluids - I do mine every 30k

Spark plugs also every 30k

Belts and hoses are probably fine. If they start squeaking, change them.

Grease everything with a zerk fitting.

On the 300K

When everyone says diff or differential fluids. I think there talking plural. I know the rear but the front is CV joints. Are they referring to the transfer case?
Because they speak of the Transmission fluid separate.

 

There’s a front diff as well

 

Yep there is a rear diff, transfer case and front diff. Listen to me... DO NOT pay a shop to do this. They’ll kill you on charges. Takes an hour tops to do all three. You just need a pump to put it in.

 

If you're doing it yourself and want to be safe, you could change all the fluids.

If the dealer is doing it, just follow what's in the manual. Otherwise they'll take both kidneys and your first born as payment.

 

^^ This with one exception. If the trans is still red and smells good, I'd just do a drain and fill. Repeat at 65k for another 'additive refresh', and then at 80k to be in sync with the rest of the driveline.

 

I was a Diesel mechanic in the Army (construction equipment 5 Ton and up) so doing my own work is no problem. I just have any place to really do it now.

Both Kidneys huh........ Well at least it won't be my new Titanium and Ceramic hips. Just had both of them replaced about 2 months back.
