The Lug Bolts on VWs always seem to be pretty beefy, sounds like you really hit it with the impact, bet it sucked to fix.

Yes, it really sucked. It was weird how it happened to only one wheel when the others had been torqued down the same way. Backed the lugs off and retorqued all of them, only problem was that wheel. Maybe that axle shaft got into a bad batch of studs?

Well got the wheel back off and it appears that all of the other lugs are ok. I guess I will put it back on and take it to a shop in the morning before work.

I was going to try and install myself looks to be a pretty big job. There's a plate on the back side that is blocking it and would have to remove quite a bit of stuff to get to the studs.

On the bright side I did purchase a torque wrench this afternoon!!

Oh and I checked the torque on the other lugs and they weren't to 83 pounds yet. Had to give them another quarter turn.

So maybe it was an out of spec stud after all ??

Maybe it's just the camera angle but the top most stud in your picture (second from left) sure looks like the threads have been stretched. If so, might as well replace it too before it fails.

    What he said ^

That stud at the 11 O'clock position is most definitely a candidate for replacement alongside the one already sheared off.

Well I'm glad you bought a torque wrench. In my mind an impact should only be used to remove fasteners.

Replacing a front wheel stud on a Tacoma is quite simple and can be done with basic tools.

What kind of torque is your impact rated for? I'd really be surprised unless you got a pretty strong impact that "just tight" would shear the stud.

Anyone have an idea what class the stock studs are? Just a little curious about it.

Got the studs replaced at the dealership this morning. They checked the others and all seemed good. They thought it may have just been a weak stud, since it spun off so cleanly. Replaced under warranty.

But torque wrench for sure from now on, dumb ass penalty tax been paid. :smack:

That's almost identical to the one I have, but mine is about 8 years old so I'm sure it's an older model. Says it's rated for 345 ft lbs but just a click or two of the trigger shouldn't deliver the full torque. Especially considering all of the other lug nuts on that same wheel were under torqued.

Not sure as to what class the studs are.

I have a 700 ft-lb impact drill and will never use that above the second setting, I just use it to get the lugnuts on then pull out the torque wrench now...never did that in the past but hearing too much from other guys about shearing them off.. easy to replace the lugnuts though, although i think you at have to take the hub off, I did that before, not to bad, just time consuming..

If the dealer is the one who put on your wheels I would insist they replace them all for free. I had a dealer break one of mine I checked the torque on the rest and the dumb shop flunkies had them at 150ft lbs!! They use a stupid impact torque wrench at the dealers. I also made them warranty my front brakes. For the most part I have an excellent dealer so they didn’t even question it. Mistakes happen but making them right is how dealerships stand apart.
