New Tacoma vs Tundra

Went to a Toyota dealer yesterday. Salesman says while we was looking at new 2010 plain Jane 2.7l auto reg cab Taco, let me show the best deal on the lot. It was a 2010 new reg cab auto 4.0l V6 Tundra for about the same money. ($17k)

Much nicer interior but so big and worse gas mileage. (15/19 vs 20/25)
Very plush bucket seats and nice fold down center console.
Nice room behind the seats for tools and stuff.
5200 lbs tow vs 3500 tow.

That Tundra is almost as big as my 2003 Dodge 2500 diesel that I sold last year because I didn't need such a big and powerful truck anymore and here I go again?

Biggest drawbacks are the MPG and size but I sure have to think about it.

 

if you don't need it why buy it. go tacoma, that is what i did.
i did not need all the power, plus i like a smaller truck.
when i drive my dad's gmc 2500 i feel like i am driving a air craft
carrier.

I just bought my Tacoma a few months ago...The Tundras were a far better deal---at least it seemed to me. I thought hard about it and then asked myself which one I'd want to drive more often? I thought a bit about the gas mileage but then I started thinking about parking that huge truck....Every lot seems to be getting smaller--Sometimes I think the Tacoma is just a bit too big....It's only a small issue but I thought that over time that one little issue would be big for me....(I do wish I had the power of the Tundra though...my biggest complaint on the Tacoma is that it just seems a bit under powered...if I could have gotten a V8 in the Tacoma that would have been perfect for me)

 

You're asking a tacoma forum if you should get a tundra or a tacoma? I bet you'll get the opposite response from a tundra forum.

In all seriousness though, which one best suits your needs? Will you ever need the extra size of the tundra? Which will have a better resale value down the road? Which one drives nicer? etc etc.

 

I'm all for the Tacoma but I'm a big guy and I need a roomy cab and if I had to get a reg cab base model I'd probably get the tundra because I love the room.
If the Tacoma was a Prerunner or 4x4 then I would probably consider it

 

If you don't need the size of the Tundra, why throw away the extra money on the gas over the years.

 

i sold my f350 crew cab and was looking at the tundra, when i thought what the hell am i doing i just sold a great truck because i did not want a school bus anymore and now i am looking at the same thing??? so i bought a tacoma and love it. i miss the extra room but love the turning ability and agility of my new truck.

 

All good points above. I was just shocked to see the Tundra at the same price at the Tacoma. I had a first gen 2000 Tundra for years.

Guess I'll just keep my 2002.

I'm not worried about resale values since I keep my vehicles for many years and who knows what the future resale value will be.

 

I feel the same way about my grandpa's Dodge Ram.

 

I got the Tacoma V6 prerunner Acc cab
Love cab room and That MPG is great.
there is a lot power in that V6 motor.
I have to drive up hill every day going home and a 4 cyc was not going to do it.

 

Good choice on the taco. I would rather push my tacoma then drive a ford f-150. Just sayin....

 

It's a better deal because it is no deal. It's harder sell that why the Tundra price is what it is. I don't think I'd go with a bare bones Taco though. Eventually you may regret that.

 

It would be a toss up for me at this point. MPG is a moot point. You get more truck for your money with the Tundra. Parking isn't an issue for me, since I don't drive/park on city streets. Parking in a parking lot isn't an issue, just park further out if it's a problem.

Most likely, I would opt for the fullsize. The Tacoma has the advantage of size and offroad ability (looks better than the Tundra as well) as well as no AIP failures

 

I guess it depends where you're at. I found a Brand New FX4 4x4 Crew Cab with leather and all the other goodies for just over $35K. Not quite the same price as a Taco, but doable.

Not to thread hijack, so does the 4.0L move the Tundar well? I would go with the Tacoma for the mpg's if you're looking at cost as a factor. If oyu don't need a full sized truck, why get one?

 

I agree that if you don't need the extra room and power, then the Tacoma is the way to go, obviouslly. I mean, that's why Toyota made 2 different pick ups.

Personally, the only times I wish I bought a Tundra is when I tow my travel trailer. But seeing that I only tow that thing about 1000 miles every year, it's worth it for me to get the Tacoma which I drive about 17k miles every year

 

a taco will hold value better than a tundra
