Pretty sure it's dealer dependant if they cover it. If it was me, I'd go in as stock as possible. I removed my sumo springs because I wanted no hassles.

X2. Go in as close to stock as humanly possible to lessen the chances of having a bogus excuse raised. Dangle knows of what he speaks...

When I was driving my truck the other day the howling was extremely loud, realized I had the back seats folded down. Definitely going to pull the rear seats and put sound deadener back there as I believe that is going to make a big difference in drowning out the noise.

From r sI me reason I heard mine yesterday kind of loud at 58 but now I can’t really get it to get that loud again. There was an awkward silence in the truck after both my wife and I heard it. She’s tired of it too. If it starts again Toyota is going to have to fix it.

    Hi Guys,

I have a 2018 trd sport upgrade with this rear diff whine. I called the dealer and the told me that the TSB was applied to the 2018's, but he didn't really check anything to confirm this he just said it. I am skeptical if the tsb has been performed. Can any one fill me in

If your rear diff is whining then take it to a different dealer (so the current one doesn’t give you any crap) and tell them to fix it. If they also say the TSB has already been done then tell them OK, but you need to fix what my truck is doing. You could even try your current dealer. I think the TSB says for 16-17 MYs. Best of luck but make them fix it and call corporate if they don’t.

It doesn't. I did that prior to the TSB being published. I had the TSB performed and it cured about 50% of the volume of the whine.

I’m going to do this too.

On another note, I just drove from CA to CO and I was getting some similar noise while climbing grades at like 70-75 mph. I’m hoping it was just wind noise though, I couldn’t quite figure out how to recreate it on demand. It sounded just like the rear end howl.

Other than that the truck did great! Struggled a little at higher elevations but all I had to do was down shift a gear. I know a lot of people complain about this tranny but I am not one of them. I’ve been averaging almost 21 mpg, double overdrive for the win!

I pulled the rear seats, entire back wall, and all storage containers and put down sound deadener (80mil) and closed cell foam. I also removed c pillar trim and added a ton of foam inside it. I think my howl is worse on the passenger side so I shoved foam into the bolt hole for that cab mount. I also went ahead and added a small piece of sound deadener to the bolt hole cover (probably didn’t help any ha). Overall it all did help out a little bit, but not a ton. I still can hear the howl from 61-58mph on deceleration.

The reason I am expecting it to help in my truck was because when I had the rear seats folded down the sound increased dramatically.

Yeah, it should help out some. It just depends on how loud it is to begin with. Mine was still loud after I installed the TSB parts so I knew the sound deadener and foam wouldn’t fix it completely. I drive with the windows down all the time now so I usually don’t notice it.

I bought the Lexus damper and may try to add it to the passenger leaf pack (originally meant for their exhaust resonance issue). I just need to make it down to my dads shop so I can make a bracket for it.

If anything helps, please let us know. Either my ear has retuned itself to hear this again or mine is getting louder after the initially excellent results. If it’s getting louder then this may not end well. I can put up with a lot but noises are not within my definition of a lot. I’m hoping mine doesn’t resurface to nuisance levels again.

My 18 has this. Drives me crazy. I don't have time to read all 25 pages. Can someone tell me if others have reported this on their 18s?

Thank you buddy. I am not in the Tacoma often, but last week I was a passenger. Shit was driving me crazy. I asked the other half how long this had being going on and was told a long time that it was coming from the wind on the front grill. It was definitely the rear end. If I had to drive or ride in this thing everyday I would go crazy. I have an 18 DCSB OR 4x4. The 16 DCSB Sport 4x2 did not ever do this.

Once you hear it, it’s almost impossible to unhear it, my friend. Sorry for your troubles but get it to the dealer and complain to corporate and maybe they’ll actually fix this some day.

Noticed the whine really badly in mine today. At my 20K service I'm making a tech ride with me so I can show them. If I don't, they'll never do anything about it. Last time, they ran my Tacoma on a lift to hear the noise, which obviously does not show the actual issue.

Feel like I'm the only person here who has it at pretty much all speeds >20mph, at least based off of what I've read in this thread. It is most pronounced when cruising on the highway. At times, it is intolerable as I can hear it over the radio.

Prior to the TSB “fix” I could hear mine over the radio turned up to 35.
