BUT... That would mean the mother-in-law would no longer be able to park her car in the garage, as that would add a couple of feet to the total length.

And... frankly I'm not sure how to deal with the hand rails.

Any carpenters have any advice?

So, full honestly, the ramp needs to be anchored. At least at some point prevented from sliding.

I seem to be completely incapable of cutting two pieces of wood to the same length. So this is the most help I can offer.

Google up some deck plans. That will show you how to do hand rails.

I'd use a 2x4 box overed with 3/4 plywood for the ramp.

I thought so as well. But not sure how I'd do that. I guess I could anchor the plywood to the landing, and attach the ramp to the plywood. I do have some concrete anchors...

Do you have anymore pictures of the area that you're trying to build the ramp in? On the right side of the picture it looks like there is a garage door sensor. If I understood what you were saying it sounds like you want to come straight out from the door, but will block the garage door. Can you go out to the left of the picture? A 10 foot ramp is going to be a super shallow angle. Could you do 5-6 feet instead? That's still under half the angle stairs typically run.
