It's not for everyone, but it drastically reduces the miles (in the summer) on the Taco. 1000cc's of pure commuting bliss. Mind you, it is a little hot in the afternoons with all the gear on, but I sure as f*ck wouldn't do it the "squid" way (as in: tank top, flip-flops and helmet hanging on the side for some dumbass reason).
    fz1.jpg

otherwise, get an old 4 cylinder Corolla, Sentra, etc, and also get 40mpg...just not with a smile on your face :D

Blanket advice for the Honda would be just avoid any modded vehicle since those are the only problems you'll run into. As long as it looks maintained, it'll run forever. I've had 5. (And maintained another couple) not including bikes and can't think of a single problem i had.

I don’t have to worry about heavy traffic. It’s the ones that are still half asleep for me.

Yeah no way I'd ride in traffic. Did when i lived in Lakewood and worked in golden and never saw traffic... But I'm over riding alongside vehicles. Too risky these days...unless they allow lane splitting during rush hour and teach people to drive.

Supra, worst mpg I've gotten is 20 and I was driving like a dick, boosting every time I'd stop and go. May not be super reliable but it's fun as hell to drive. Plus it's a "rare" Toyota you don't see to often :spy:

My dad is visiting in mid August and we are going to head down to Telluride. Would Black Bear Pass be doable with a stock SR5 4x4 and KO2s? Any other passes in the area you recommend?

Yes, you can do the alpine loop in a stock vehicle.

Most things in the area are doable in a stock truck. Poughkeepsie is not, or at least wasn't. I don't have current info, but I seem to recall something about a legal bypass being created or something, would definitely investigate further before attempting. Also, that ties into Mineral Creek, which again I haven't run in many years and thought nothing of when I did but apparently got much worse since. The rest of the stuff up there, Alpine Loop as Stig mentioned, is doable. Black Bear is more about the driver than the vehicle. It can be done stock but there are a couple of spots and then the switchbacks themselves that if you are not confident in your abilities (and comfortable doing it on the edge of a loooooong way down) I wouldn't recommend it (full disclosure, I haven't). The other two on that side of 550 that you can use to make a loop are Imogene and Ophir (Black Bear is kind of in the middle). Scroll back a few pages and I posted a link to a pdf map of the Alpine Loop by the Forest Service as well as Dropbox link to a map I made of trails in the area. There's also been several discussions about the area in the last couple of weeks both here and in the Trip Report thread.

I'd throw Yankee Boy Basin into the mix as well as all those mentioned. There's also a trail off the Alpine Loop called Picayne Gulch that you can take a longer, more scenic (and more challenging) route up to Animas Forks.
