I'm getting ready to make a 1600 mile trip. My Tacoma has 194K on it, I've only put the last 20K on it. The first owner had all of this work done at the dealership and when I search the service records I don't see anything on the serpentine belt or pulleys. I don't know of any problems but I want to be pro active. I'm thinking about replacing the belt and pulleys. I read on a thread to use the OEM Tensioner because the Gates/Rock Auto part doesn't fit perfect. So if I buy the OEM Tensioner and then the Gates 36173 x2, Gates 36174 x1, Gates Belt K070834 should be the best way to go?

I suggest replace the belt and carry the old belt as backup, unless it's torn up and in bad shape. Before replacing the belt, release it from the tensioner and check the pulleys for play and smoothness; if one is bad, replace all as none have probably been replaced. If the tensioner is good, the bearing in the pulley can be replaced; the size is 17X40X17.5. Also check for play in the water pump, alternator and power steering pumps. Check weep hole in water pump for leakage and do a load test on the alternator, but I digress ...

I concur this job sucks. That tensioner pully sucks. I didn't have a way to take the fan off so I pulled the alternator through the wheel well. I found getting into the alternator ac compressor and tensioner was easier in some spots this way. I found a different step by step online with pics

Damn..I hope not....buddy wants me to help him figure out his power steering issues. This is a possible job for us if the steering shaft isn't screwballed .

Why would you replace the tensioner for a power steering issue ? Haha

Mechanic buddy suggested it after changing belt before moving onto the pump itself. Under the theory that belt is loosing tension impacting the pump. Truck does have 225k on it .

But I'm going along with my TW research first and trying/testing the steering shaft.

Is the tensioner worse than the rear brake lines? Looking to swap my belt finally and may change out the pulleys because they’re still oem

    So much worse

Just to give you an idea
    -remove battery
    -remove skid plate
    -remove alternator
-unbolt ac compressor (bolts impossible to reach)
    - remove fan and fan shroud.
    -remove tensioner.

It took me 4.5 hour to do solo.

Get s stethescope. That’s how I found out my tensioner was bad. I haven’t drove the truck yet but I’m 90% sure this will fix my loud knocking sound.

couldn't u just have replaced the tensioner pulley, instead of the whole tensioner/pulley system?

My tensioner was bad. I replaced the bearing but that didn’t fix my issue.
