There is another member on here with 3 Mal's. She was saying you can get them into scent work which gets their brain going. A ton of exercise without making them think can create a super high endurance dog that's difficult to wear out. It might be something to look into. Not sure if you're doing that or not.

We will have to see...first has to be control and him listening and responding to commands and basic behavior stuff

Once that’s in place we’ll probably work on something like that

I want to try and get him certified as a cadaver dog eventually or S&R...but that’s way off

    Absolutely!
    Great for human too!
I know the feeling, been dreaming and researching Weims for probably 10 years, time has come next summer!!!!!!!!
I mean, look at this dog! So regal, and what a brain.

After experience with one, we can take on a Mali for #2

I got my girl in May 30th. She is 4 months old, and comes from a HEAVY line of pps, k9, and MWD. She is literally a dinosaur. I've found that mentally wearing her out helps more than physical. She is 28lbs of pure fury.

EDIT. It will save your wallet on tennis balls if you buy one of the KONG balls. Mine hasn't gone through it yet, and its been a month.

I would love to use a Kong, but he doesn’t care about them at all

Bunnies, squirrels and bright yellow tennis balls are the only things I’ve found that kick his drive in

Edited to add...I wish I had gotten my boy as a pup...training him the right way from the start would be so much easier than wrangling a 2 year old with only basic commands and no previous discipline

Have you tried the treats inside or the spray in doggo peanut butter? that's how I got her to switch

Edited to add: if you want to train him in SAR you need to do that NOW. if you wait till later it will only get harder. these dogs are extremely intelligent, but also super stubborn. Negative reinforcement I've found doesn't work unless its seldom used.

    they LOVE to please

My dog shreds tennis balls. His mouth slips off when trying to destroy these. They last literally months for him. Tennis balls are gone in hours.

Tried treats that he likes...that results in no fetching and just ignored commands because he wants to just chew on it

The tennis balls work because I can pay him easily for doing well with training and give him some physical exercise too

I just buy the cheap bulk tennis balls in a bag for like $10 when I need them

I pay mine with belly rubs and lots of good girls. With full on chews I've noticed that she will do anything for them, but once she has them she isn't doing anything until its gone.

The weimaraners I have been around were the opposite of what I would call smart. They were all crazy, and appeared brainless. Maybe they were in the wrong hands, or just poor examples of the breed. All I know is they turned me off of weimaraners completely, I would never own one.

The bigger girl is husky collie and the biggest ass. She is so damn stubborn with training. The pup is my golden child shepherd husky and she is so motivated to train. She loves everyone but is ready to fight when she feels threatened. I'm absolutely doing bite work with her. I've always loved shepherds and grown up around them, but this husky shepherd girl is something else and a ton of fun. Great off switch too, which dutch and mal shepherds don't typically have.

Maybe they picked a breed that doesn't match their skills and circumstances. I guess picking the right breed is part of being a good owner, so I agree.

Nah both husky mixes. I wanted a Dutch for so long and I wasn't having any luck finding one I liked. Then my older girl popped up on Craigslist and she looked like a knock off Dutch. I love her but damn she's stubborn. Then I wanted a shepherd with blue eyes and in came my puppy. Once she's done teething I'm starting bite training with her. My collie girl is not cut out for it

Ya, not enough research on the dog you want could be a start to bad ownership/handling..
