I think that’s what happened to this dude. He overfilled and didn’t vent = explosion

It was scary when there was pressure when I tried to vent.

I always thought you were supposed to fill it all the way full so you don't leave a large void for gases to expand, but apparently you want it about 90% full. But yes, venting is good. I should go vent mine today and make a habit of it.

Basically anytime theres a change in barometric pressure, you should vent. So if you go up a hill, vent. Down the hill, vent. Move the truck... you got it! Vent!

No. Well, sorta. You should vent in elevation changes but just driving around town there’s no need to vent. Only reason I would vent today is because it’s summer and it’s hot. Over winter I wouldn’t bother.

    To many, but never done
Wow thanks for that heads up...I figured the metal cans would not explode like that. I guess plastics make it possible yet again.

Need air pocket inside the can.
The fuel will expand, but the air will compress to allow for that expansion.

If full of fuel it will expand, expand, expand. Then boom.

Just vented my entirely full gas can. Barely any fumes came out. Was mildly disappointed as I was expecting an explosion.

Do you ever rotate the fuel out and refill with fresh? I always used stabil in my lawnmower and snowblower but the bottle said it only gave an extra 90 days or so to the fuel.
