    Hello Group!

    Lovin' my old horse of a 2002 tacoma that I owned for the past 16 years!
    Lately, I have had some hard shifting on the truck, and ended with a tranny flush at the dealership. Did not help much... The funny issue with this is that the hard shift occurs after the engine is warmed up enough about few miles of driving. In other words, the shifting is smooth on a cold engine. What is the deal...would appreciate some pointers. Took it to the dealership a few times, and they dont claim there is anything wrong...

    Thanks,
    pungu

    Welcome:) Mine's a year older than yours-I bought it new like you did and it will stay with me 'till I die. Wish I had an answer for your hard shifting but one will come along soon. These are smart Tacoma people here.

    Welcome to TW! Any idea when the trans fluid was changed before you had it flushed?

    Hi Y'all: Thanks for the welcome messages...

    Hi Boogie3748: The truck did not get any transmission service done until this dealership flush when the mileage read around 116k. Are the solenoid shifter the culprit? I am not sure because it seems temperature related...since it happens after the truck is driven for a few miles. Also, smell gas at stop lights/signs when idling (mileage is a crappy 15mpg)

    Just as an FYI about things I thought would help fix the problem...
    * replaced spark plugs
    * replaced the TPS
    * replaced the fuel filter/air filter
    * cleaned the Throttle body a couple of times in the past 6 months

    Another update (8/2/2018):
    * replaced spark plug wires...(NGK part)
    * coolant flush (drained the petcock underneath the radiator), refilled, and burped!

    Not a significant change...I still have a bad transmission shift (stays in lower gear) after the engine is operatiing temperature.

    Anyone? Any help?

    I just bought a fuel filter and its been a long time since I changed it the last time.
    So I feel like I am starting from scratch.
    What was involved in you doing that?
    I'm just figuring out what tools I will need, etc. before I set into it.

    I just noticed you have the 2.4L, wonder if yours is an apple and mine an orange.
    I have the 2.7L.

    Mulepadre: Yes, indeed... hope you are seeing some difference in performance, because I didnt!! but it is a good ~100k preventive manitenance...

    Also, mine is a 3.4L, so there is an apple and an orange difference between your and mine, but maybe not when it comes to changing the fuel filter!!

    ah...okay! yes, mine is driver side almost right underneath of the fuel door.
    Not much of a pain removing it, other than the little fuel spill (wear vinly gloves)

    Toyota must have gotten a new chief design engineer for the 2003 2.7Ls.
    I am reserving my comment about his prowess or better lack there of.
    Why move it under the manifold beats me.
