I was driving a bit ago and all of the sudden I saw this warning saying front camera unavailable. I thought 'well yeah because I don't have a front camera', but then I realized it was the Toyota Safety Sense when the dash warning light with 2 cars colliding said off. Just because I was curious I tried to engage cruise control and it said radar assisted cruise control was unavailable. This lasted for a few minutes and then all of the sudden the collision prevention off light disappeared I tried to engage cruise control and everything worked fine.

I'm just wondering if anyone has ever had this happen? I checked up front and didn't notice anything on the radar so no idea what caused it. I have my first appointment on August 6th and wonder if it is worth bringing up.

    Thanks for the assistance.

Is the glass dirty? Maybe grime buildup? Mine has worked flawlessly so far.

Mine has gone off, but due to bug buildup. Once cleaned off it worked just fine.
However, I still have an issue with the Pre-collision; it goes off whenever it wants to and scares the crap out of me on an empty, straight stretch of road.

Yes, during heavy rain or snow it can get obstructed. I also had one or two false break alarms I think were caused by sun glare.

I had my PCS do that to me last week. I put my foot on the brake anyhow, I think out of pure instinct.

I have had the front camera error, but only when I had the radar cruise control on, canceled it (not off) and then turned onto a 1 lane, unmarked road. I think the computer decided that since it couldn't see the lines, it shut off the camera.

I also have had the PCS turn off when I take off the traction control.

Nice and sunny, just washed the truck a couple of days ago and checked for bugs on the sensor when I stopped and it was still clean. So far the collision warning has worked great other than this time when the radar just cut out for no reason.

I have not had this happen yet. Just curious, have you changed out the grille or modified the suspension.

It could be glare from the sun. It could be heat waves coming off the highway. It could be anything. Every vehicle manufacturer has this problem. This is why we don't have full autonomous vehicles yet. They haven't figured out how to be smarter than mother nature.

FYI, my wife's Highlander had this issue recently. When she got home, she told me about it and I went out to look at the sensor. Nothing there. However, there was a big dead butterfly lying on my driveway right under the sensor. I think the butterfly was "pinned" by the wind to the sensor and when she stopped to park it just slid off. Something like that could have happened and you would never know.

Lastly, as soon as this tech is ready for primetime the leap will be straight to self driving cars.

Mine did this yesterday. My truck is clean. No bugs on the sensor and weather was perfect.

I did install a decal over the Toyota emblem a week ago and this was the first time it had any malfunction. I didn't suspect it was the emblem overlay as it is just a sticker.

My malfunction was exactly like yours. Said unavailable. Pre-collision light was lit. I turned off cruise and waited a mile then turned it back on and everything was normal.

Since yours did the same and I have heard of this happening to others I am fairly certain it is not my decal.

I think it was something to do with the sun setting but I may be crazy.

Edit: I was also on a curvy section of the highway. Not sure if the lines were throwing it off and it was a preventative thing or what.

I guess I also didn't realize if the sensor isn't working you can't use cruise control at all. I guess they don't want you thinking that the car is going to slow itself and then have you ram into the back of someone.

Yeah, the only difference was that I didn't have cruise on when the warning came on. I tried to turn it on after the warning to see what happened and that is when I realized if that sensor isn't working you don't get cruise control at all.

What kind of sticker do you have? Is it covering the whole emblem or just the Toyota symbol lines?

It kills the radar cruise, but regular cruise control will still work.

So do you hit the button on the steering wheel to shut off the radar? I guess I will have to play around with that. I have only ever used the cruise with the radar on.

Also I heard it normally says it needs to be cleaned when dirty and I did not get any warning about cleaning it.

A quick push of the cruise control turns on the radar adaptive cruise control. Hold down the button longer and it turns on regular cruise control. So if your radar turns off then hold down the button for 3-5 secs to activate old school ha

I should also mention I have over 100 miles on highway using radar cruise since I placed the decal over the emblem. Yesterday was the first time I had any issue. Its adapted to the vehicle speed in front of me fine as well as warning me to hit the brake when appropriate.
