Replacing front wheel bearings on 02 Tacoma 4x4. The new bearings (from Toyota) are different than the ones originally installed on truck. In fact , one side of of the new ones pops right out making it easy to repack with grease of your choice.
One side of the new bearing has a metal shield with o-ring seal. The other side of the new bearing has just a metal shield and is not sealed.
My question is , which side should be pressed into hub , if anyone knows it would be appreciated.
    Thanks

unsealed side pops out , note lack and quality of grease , perhaps why front wheel bearing failure in newer vehicles is common, also note plastic cages, orig bearing on right

Your missing the metal seal. All the ones I've seen have it on both sides.

How hard is a wheel bearing job?

I have this annoying squeak when turning and I suspect it’s the wheel bearings.

Sure it's not the dust shields rubbing?
Pressing the bearing in and out is pretty technical. Definitely need 2 people for the press work. Pressing adapters help a ton. It's best to have the 4 pressing plates like
    timmah did in his video.

I debated doing the bearings when I was rebuilding the steering knuckles off the truck when I did my conversion, but I opted not to.

Actually it could be the backing plates. I had to bend them and cut them every which way for my tundra calipers to fit.

the dust shields you mean? I'm getting a nasty grinding noise when applying the brakes. Went away for a bit after bending shit, but its back.

I know I need to replace a spindle for sure

If I had realized that could be done, I would have washed that cheap grease out and put mine back together with some good stuff.

For that matter I should have just repacked my stockers, they were fine but had already ordered new so......

    plastic cages, sheesh.

Both new bearings from Toyota are the same , only SHIELDED on one side and shielded and sealed on the other
My factory Timkens I took out have 250k on them and they were still lubed well- almost wish I didn't
I only decided to replace them since I'm redoing the whole front end
For the work involved I dont think I can let my self install these cheaply made new bearings

have you pressed out the old ones yet?
Can the originals be re-packed with a GOOD grease? I mean for years we used to re grease roller bearings, you have new seals now.

Yes they are pressed out. After the trauma they went through to get them out I wouldn't trust repacking and re installing them

As Factory installed, hub/snap ring side , note shield and seal
    upload_2018-7-26_12-28-8.jpg

shots of removed factory bearing , ground down to be used as press adapter
sealed and shielded side toward hub
    upload_2018-7-26_12-31-23.jpg

note shielded-no seal side installed toward axle

    upload_2018-7-26_12-32-48.jpg

any how , that's the way they were installed . I did see today some bearings that were shielded and sealed both sides but passed on them as they were chinese

opposite my guess. I thought more dirt and grime was likely from the inboard side.
Maybe to protect from the installation of the snapring?

I just did a manual hub swap on my 98 4runner. The original wheel bearings were installed with the black ring unsealed side facing the CV axle and the all silver side that is sealed facing the snap ring and hub. So OP, I came up with the same conclusion as you did.
