Change oil filter only

Just tried to change my oil filter and do an oil change for the first time on my 2016 Sport. Dealership was completing the free service for two years and tightened the oil filter so tight I couldnt get it off. I put the new oil in cause I have to get to work but still need to change the filter. Can I change the filter without replacing all the new oil again so I dont waste it? Is it all going to pour out assuming I ever get it off?

Also Im going to try a breaker bar once I purchase it but are there other options that might work? Scared of breaking the housing if its too stubborn. I already broke my knuckles

Go to dealership and demand they loosen the filter and torque to specified 18 ft lbs- they obviously did sloppy maintenance.

 

While at the dealership, show them your knuckles. A breaker bar is probably what they used to put the filter housing on.

 

Are you using this removal tool? It should come off fairly easy with a socket and ratchet.

Toyota did a free oil change at 20K for me. I know how the OP feels because they put it it on too tight. I had to use a box wrench on the filter tool to get it off. Sometimes free is not a very good deal.

 

So glad I switched to the Baxter Performance spin-on adapter.

I asked my dealer when I took mine in for 20k oil change to please not over tighten the housing. They said "we will try, but heat makes them fuse up". Whatever the hell that means. So I'm going to buy the metal one before the next change.

 

You guys know oil filter housings expand and contract with heat right? The plastic housings and rubber gaskets will swell and tighten themselves over time. I guarantee they didn't "put it on with a breaker bar". I've had to do many oil changes on the Toyota canister type filters, and usually have to use some type of longer ratchet or breaker bar to loosen them.

Exactly, Jesus relax everyone. They tighten over time from heat cycles.

 

You guys . This happens to alot of machines oil filters. I hand tighten all my machines filters at work and when I go to change them it's the same story. They get tightened due to the cycle of heat and cooling down constantly. This is normal and don't be that guy. Makes you look stupid. High possibility they DIDN'T over torque.

 

I never even thought about the heat cycles as being an issue, very good point.

Was the plastic housing updated for 2018?

 

I also put on a healthy amount of o-ring grease every oil change. This helps with removal the next time.

That is what is likely missing when a dealer does it. The fact is that I had no problem getting the cartridge off when I did the 5k oil change. I lubed the o-ring and installed it with a torque wrench. I'd like to be there when the dealership takes it off, but we know that doesn't fly.

Regarding what folks are saying above, I agree that filters seat themselves and need more torque to remove than when installed. That said, I believe it is a fair bet that mechs at dealers do the gutentite method instead of using a torque wrench.

I worked with a guy that was struggling with warping new rotors on his Accord. I had the same issue with my PoS Dodge. Using a torque wrench and properly coming up on the torque solved this. When I told him about it, he noted that he rebuilds motors on Unlimited Hydros and knows what 74ft-lb feels like. Laughing about his calibrated arm. He did agree to try my $20 HF clicker one day and handed it back to me with a red face.
