looking them up as we speak. I should clarify by asking what models/brands are you guys running. It appears Warn is a top end winch, but do I "need" that name or is something less expensive fine (keep in mind ive gone the last 6 years of offroading without a winch...so I am not looking for most expensive now lol). I have used/needed a winch about 3-4 times. Everything else I have either been able to drive it, back out, or decide not to play haha.

    smittybilt a bad route?

Am I looking for a 10k since the truck weighs about 4500? I heard you more or less want double the weight. . . .?

Smittybuilt 12k. My Tacoma weighed 5050 lbs without the winch and bumper. And with me on board. So minus 236lbs and plus 130lbs. Must have weighed about 340 more when the bed rack and roof top tent on.
haven't had a chance to actually use the winch yet. It's a fresh install. But Jim has the same one too and his used as numeroushaven't

I have the Warn M-8000s but only cause Pelfrybilt gave me a deal i couldnt pass up on (when i was buying bumper, skids, fog lights, and lightbar)

Bigger is generally better (weight wise) but really you'd be fine 90% (if not higher) of the time with an 8k. Especially since usually you are only using the winch more for traction than straight like pulling full weight. That and smart winching will work in your favor...like using snatch blocks.

Also you have to remember a 8k winch only pulls at that capacity on the first layer. Each layer reduces the capacity.

I'm running a Superwinch 9.5k and it has done me well so far in the little bit I have used it. It has really good power compared to some friends Smittybilt's on their Jeeps. Down at Tillamook this year I had to use it to drag my truck up and over some 2'+ diameter rocks in the mud and it didn't have an issue at all. I got it on sale from Amazon for cheaper that than Smittybilts too, around $425-450.

Just make sure to carry the hardwired controller too. Cant remember the brand but remember a few people seemed to have trouble with the wireless portion stopped working.

It's just a wire you have to carry. Mine quit working once. Then I put a new battery in.
