Thanks for sharing...glad it worked out (not without pain and huge vet bills ). But at least he's still with ya.
We tried one once with our lab, and he went to town on it, but he kept spitting the chunks while chewing. Never again as well, and he didn't get to chew it after he started doing that junk, which could have easily turned out like your story.

 

That's too bad. Glad he's ok. Was it the white Galileo kind that is hard as a rock or one of the others? The white ones that I showed a screenshot of look impossible to break a piece off. Both of my last dogs just shave tiny pieces off. I think the design doesn't allow them to clamp down to break chunks off. Their teeth slide down it because it's rounded.

 

Too long ago to remember. I don't buy dog toys any more. Expensive and don't last. I have a spool of 1" three strand rope. I just cut a two foot piece and tie several knots in it. She loves the hell out of that thing. She likes to play tug to war with the Chesapeake, or whip it around, and throw it. Best idea I ever had for dog play.

 

Either way, it collects in the gut and can really f things up.

Riley has those rock hard Nylabones. Takes about a week to get the nubs on either end off. Well, damaged.

 

I must be lucky. Seems like all his shavings end up in the carpet. What's funny, I looked out the window now and he was chewing on one in the back yard.

I get beef femurs cut into 6" pieces. Keeps them busy for hours getting the marrow out of the center and scraping meat remnants off the surface.
Do it when the weather is nice. Love watching them lay in the grass gnawing on them.
