AutoTransmission Screen Filter

Bought a used 04 Tacoma V6 50K miles don't know what kind of life it has had, transmission shifts great, but I was thinking of doing a drain and refil, For those of you that have removed the pan and washed out the filter was it that dirty, and how many miles were on the vehicle.

 

My cousin has an 02 4cyl. He does a lot of towing with it. He had no idea the tranny fluid needed to be done until I brought it up. His truck had 160k when we dropped the pan. F%@$ the fluid was practically brown. As a matter of fact I remember thinking that maybe he was better off not doing the flush. Anyways, the filter was pretty much the same as the one my cousing bought from Toyota. Really it was just the fluid that was dirty. Hope this helps, I know you have the V6 4x4 and his was a 4cyl 2wd.

 

Does your AT have a drain plug? If you remove the pan you will only get about 2 and 1/2 quarts of fluid out. Might as well just remove the drain plug if you have one.

On my 2002 2.4l auto, I drained the fluid at 90k milles and got out about 2 and 1/2 quarts out. If I remember right the owner' manual said that is how much you would get out on a drain. Total capacity is about 11 quarts but again check your owner's manual. The fluid drained out was brown instead of red like new fluid. So I drove the truck for a while and then repeated the drain and drive for three more times. I am now at 93k miles and the fluid is red like it should be.

The other option is a flush which is detailed some where on this site but after reading the procedure, I decided that was better done by a trusted shop if you can fine one.

Again, my owners manual just says to do the drain and refill.

 

Seems to me I read that on mine you get 4 qts on a drain and refil could be wrong tho.

 

on a drain and refill.....they all will be give or take a bit....but it right at 3 quarts on a drain and fill for my truck. now...that said....when i drop the pan and clean the filter screen.....its more right over 4 quarts. 5 usually does it.

 

if it is hot and level you'll get what they say (engine size, and drive model make the difference), if the front is up on blocks so you got a nice grade, you get more out of the torque converter, which holds the bulk of it. Last time I did this I had the front way up (be sure to chalk it up good!) I got close to 5-6qts out of my A430F transmission.

 

Seems odd that removing the pan gets more put than just pulling the plug. Maybe removing the screen alows more to drain out.

 

yeah....there is always a lil more left in the pan even with just draining it...but when the filter screen is unbolted...you get more out then too.
