Hondo Garage's New Thing

My description was a little confusing. I'll have a one big drawer that takes up about 2/3 of the width on the driver side of the truck and a pull out kitchen/fridge for the remainder on the passenger side. Then I'll top it off with a water tank behind drawers, tucked against the cab and a battery/solar setup behind the kitchen setup, so four uneven quadrants. I'm hoping to make a hybrid of these two builds I found. Keep the fridge mount location from the first one, but replace the sink, etc with the stove layout. I'm all for cooking and expanding my camp, but I've lost count of the number of times I've rolled up to a spot too tired to setup camp with an early morning approaching.

I'm really excited to get my GFC, but in the meantime seeing everyones' builds keeps me going.

 

Right about three inches but it angles up pretty gradually. The brackets that mount the GFC to the bedrail stick in just under two inches. Since the bedsides angle outward slightly from the ottom of the bed there is about a one inch overall overhang with the mount brackets.

Edit. This is on a second gen, just noticed you have a turd.

Edit #2. My Dometic CF50 is 31” tall with the lid opened fully vertical.

 

Ahhhh i gotcha that makes much more sense having the fridge/ stove on a different plane. Looks like a hell of a build out. Are you planning on leaving yourself room to get in and out of the camper? Or are you waiting to GFC’s release of a ladder. I messaged with Wiley on InstaGram a week or so ago and he mentioned a ladder was coming in the very very near future.

I’m trying to leave as much space open if i need to hang out on a rain day.

Oh and for those late night simple cook nights, or rain days i keep a MSR Windburner with hanging kit and always have a few mountain house foods kicking around. I’ve found that’s the fastest if you don’t want to drag the cooking gear out let alone clean up afterwards.

Also the Windburner is almost always my coffee maker. I’ve never used anything that boils water as fast as that.

It is cool the number of options there is. I can’t wait to see some builds. Looks like I’m gonna have to tap into @smelly621 for solar advice. But i think I’m a ways away from that.

@YOTA 4X4 I'm hoping to keep the entire driver side above the drawer system open for access and hiding from the elements. I need to do a mock up to determine drawer height and make sure that I still have sufficient livable space between the drawers and the GFC sleeping platform, but I figured if I want extra room I can just move the sleeping sections to one side.

 

Haha, talked to her last night. The call fits the time frame for my build pretty perfectly, though, so probably just a coincidence.

 

Under my AluCab canopy, I can reach in through the windoor and open the fridge just enough to get something small out of it. There should be more vertical room with the GFC. It's an ARB63 that measures 17" tall without the slide.

 

#54 here. GFC just popped the question(s) (about color and options), and I feel like a school girl getting asked to prom.

Hoping it will be ready by around labor day, and that I can go up there to pick it up and check out some of the single track in Helena!

Finally washed the truck and found I put some pretty good scratches in the GFC. Matches the rest of my truck now, and I bought it to use it. Was a bit worried about the struts, but they didn't have an issue driving through the tight trees that caused the scratches.

 

Yes and no. I was on a tight trail, where I was worried about putting the top of the camper into a tree on several occasions. I would have ripped an awning off in at least one situation, but heavy, thick branches didn't present an issue.

And I am certainly EAFing wrong. I drive around on dirt roads and camp, call it what you want, but I also wheel my rig. I bought the GFC thinking it was the best solution to not hold me back from doing what I want to do with my rig, while still providing an awesome camp setup. Similar reasoning as to why I will never do some fancy buildout in the bed, that's not what these are for.

Still at work but my wife tells me a GFC package arrived at home. Did you guys get the frame protectors or just t-nut bolts?

 

It's understandable I guess. I got excited thinking that's what was in the package and then saw the posts about getting the bolts. A few more weeks won't hurt much in the long run.

I've been thinking of ideas for some exterior lighting for camping once it starts getting dark again. One idea is some slim 7" LED flood lights mounted to the sides of the upper extrusions at the back, one on each side angled downward about 45 degrees. Once the top is opened up they'd be pretty far up and out of the line of sight so the light shouldn't be blinding and be directed down and out for area illumination. Trying to work out a clean method for running the wires.

Another option. More expensive, lower light output and a relatively short runtime but no wiring needed. It would simply require making a quick mount for a 1/4" tripod stud. I'm thinking a small 1" L bracket with a t-nut attaching it to the extrusion and a 1/4"-20 bolt threaded up through the horizontal section for attaching the light cube. Charge the lights enroute, screw them on the stud, lift the top and control them from your phone as desired.
