Hunting upgrades! Show me what you got!

Deer season is right around the corner, which is roughly 80% why I traded my jeep for a truck. I'm currently in a stock 01 4 door 4x4.
What mods/upgrades have you done that helps on the farm when hunting?

 

I hunt a lot. Average 100 days a year in the field. Most of it is not deer hunting however. The majority is bird hunting. Hunting birds with birds, AKA falconry. The dog kennels/falcon perches are one obvious mod, but there are others. Basically making it better off road because I spend a lot of time off road in the pursuit of quarry for my falcons.

 

That's a nice setup. I used to make my hawkboxes out of large cardboard boxes. Reinforce the edges and seams with packing tape, nail a 2x4 covered with AstroTurf in it and cut a simple door. Worked well and easy to dispose of at the end of the season.

 

Thanks, I put a lot of thought into it. Same set up since I first got the truck 17 years ago. It's held up pretty good. Are you still practicing falconry?

 

Go for a CB or a UHF radio, not sure what else you should do besides that if you are just hunting deer. Maybe a small lift so you can fit bigger tires.

 

Been about 15 years now. Still have most of my stuff but my job is too unpredictable to be able to practice now. Once I retire or get a more stable job I plan on starting again.

 

I've thought about a CB radio but haven't pulled the trigger on that yet. I have always had one in my vehicle. I was thinking about a small 2 inch lift. I don't want to put too much money into the truck. Its 17 years old and 257,000 miles.

 

Don't really need either of those for a hunting truck. This could be useful depending on what you have setup at home. Easier to process game and easier to get it in the bed of the truck after a long day.

Honestly, I dropped a lot of that as I have private land I can access with ATV now. So I generally roll out early and follow my reflector sticker on trees to my parking spot, and if I harvest I drive them to a different spot, and quarter on the ground. Almost all remains stay for the bears, eagles, etc- I just became less patient but also really good at field dressing and skinning on the ground. A razor blade can make things quick and accurate in his scenario.

When I lived in the apartment and couldn't bring things home:
I did love the winch setup (and a spare light on top, but mostly headlamp work depending on the hour), and a tarp to keep the site clean, 5 gallon for innards. I had a wash station (1-2 5 gallon camping jugs), cutting board and knife magnet, and I began carrying a long vacuum seal bag that I would roll up the cuts before I could get them seperated into individual bags at home. Also 2 rubber maid boxes, one for scent control, and another set of clothes for processing/driving home.

 

I have one and it's awesome. Back saver

 

Pretty much everything on my truck is a hunting upgrade. Had the truck for 13 years and left it bone stock. Here's a pic of the truck, opening weekend deer last year.

Decided last year was as long as it was going to stay stock. The truck needed a lot of maintenence and I also wanted to take it deeper in to the woods... plus I just wanted it to look cooler

Ha! When I saw that title that’s exactly what I thought

 

A winch is a big help especially when you're elk hunting. Y the time you drag an elk within 100 feet of your truck, having something g else haul it that last stretch is better than sex.

Not all sex, but I can think of a few times....

 

Harbor freight #2500 wireless winch on back. Removed nerf bars they were a pain and looked terrible in bruch. Curtin receiver on front for #100 Texas Trophy Hunter feeder. Great truck! of high rack
