I think another thing that may not be considered by most people is the fact this transmission has a double over-ride (both 5th and 6th gears) resulting in poor performance in even stock form. It would be nice if there was a 4.56 option available, IMO.

There surely is a 4.56 option. ECGS will put those into your 8" pumpkins. I dont believe it exists for the OR folks with the 8.75" one tho.

I went with 4.88's and they are sitting in the garage waiting for install day next week. I am fully armored and plan to run 33's. Im hoping the added weight with the 33s wont leave me overgeared. Worst case, ill get larger tires

Is the 4.88 a self install project or should that be done by a professional?

Depends on your skill level. I ordered preassembled stuff from ECGS and so that is probably easier to diy vs doing the ring and pinion diy. I am having it done by our local yota expert @Texoma

I would think with substantial weight, and the 33's you'll be in good shape. I should have mentioned 4.56 for the 8.75 too. Did you go with a preassembled third member from ECGS? I've bought a few complete axle setups from them in the past and have always been pleased. Good guys and they know the business well.

Will This tune fix the annoying gear searching on interstate driving 70-80mph? Changes from 6th-5-4 all the time.

I would be interested for sure. As much as I love the 4runner it doesnt have the response or feeling of improved power the Tacoma had with the tune.

It does not search or hunt gears with 4.88's ,OVtune 1.03 - 91, SSP running 33's full steal armor bedrack and RTT! It holds 6th on minor grades even can accelerate on them. Will downshift to 5th on steep grades and up shift when cresting grade! I dont even have the SSP plugged in anymore. On 1.04 91 i had several problems the constant shifting (Hunting) Felt very heavy sluggish! and when coming to a stop i had that clunk! It seems every Tacoma has its own little glitches different from another. Just have to find what makes your truck feel good to drive! For me it was 4.88 gears and OV 1.03-91. Cant wait to try out 1.05 :oldglory::plane:

I’ve been on 91 1.04 for a week or two - man it gets better everyday. Cruising around surface streets at 1200 rpm @ 40mph getting close to 30 mpg. Power on the highway, easy lane changes ... it has gotten so much better then when I first installed it

This is how 1.04 is for me too, but I’m all stock besides 265/70R17’s. I don’t have 1.03 for comparison unfortunately.

Yes it will, i just got my truck tuned last night. I drive 30 miles to work one way, mostly above 70 mph. Much improved. I have an SSP and thought it was great with the factory tune. I haven't reconnected it and in drive the truck performs in every way better than the factory tune and the SSP.
This tune is worth all the money I paid and all the effort I have put into getting it installed.
Super happy to have it on board.

Out all the mods I've done so far this has made the biggest measurable difference. The exhaust, CAI and SSP were noticable especially the exhaust but the not tuned and the tuned. I feel about 20 hp gain and the low end torque is very noticeable.
I am running 1.04 91 octane. It drives the way I feel like it should have from the factory.
Definitely the best mod i have done so far.
