255/85 R16 Owners Experience

Im lost in the analysis of wheel width and offset. I have SCS Stealth 6s that are 8.5 inches. I've been told they are too wide to run a 255/80/17 at low tire pressures so I'm considering keeping the wheel tire package I have on now for non "adventuring months" and buying new wheels to compliment the 255's. Any issues with the TRD wheels in 17's or 16's @85/16) on a OME lift w/ TC UCAs? Hoping to avoid excessive cutting and chopping.

 

@Chux I believe ran 8.5” stealth 6s with his 255s without any issues.
I ran TRD Sport rims with 255/80/17s but with 1” wheel spacers. Without the spacer tire would rub on the UCA at full lock and bump. I didn’t run mud flaps and that’s the only rubbing I had till I put the wheel spacers on and was ok from there

2004 V6 Ext Cab, TRD package. Nothing done to the suspension- yet. Has anyone ran 255/85-16 on the stock shocks/springs? Lot of rubbing? I get a decent amount of inside of the tire rubbing on my 265/70-16 General AT2s now but they're ready to be replaced anyway after 65K miles of service.

I'm not in a financial position to do a lift/upgrade and the tires at the same time. Have to get new tires before winter and will do the suspension work in the spring when things loosen u and I really don't want to buy stock size rubber now and then toss them when I redo my suspension next year.

 

Idk about 1st gens. However, if your 265s are rubbing, then the 255s will also most likely rub. They're almost 3 inches taller.

If you want an upgrade, 265/75r16 is a good size that works even with 3" lifts and doesn't typically rub much.

Also, If it is just plastic that your tires are rubbing on, that's easily trimable.

If you articulate your suspension throughout it's range often, then a lift will not solve rubbing, you'll still need to trim because the tire still goes through the same range of motion even with a lift. Lifts only Help if your truck never leaves pavement.

 

That's partly why I'm considering a narrower tire on the stock rims- the inside rubs when I lock out on a turn. Was thinking the narrower tire might not rub as much.

I've been kicking around the 265/75r16 General AT2 but I'm leery of going taller without a lift.

I don't wheel very often anymore but it does get fire roads in WV from time to time. Thanks for the advice!

 

Go ahead and throw them on. Won’t hurt anything. You will have to go ahead and “make” them fit though.

To keep the tires off the frame, a wheel or wheel+wheel spacer combo with backspacing of 4” or lower is needed.

You’ll have to beat the pinch weld flat with a big hammer.

You’ll have to relocate your washer fluid reservoir.

And finally you’ll have to trim a bunch of plastic fro inside the wheel well, and maybe some off the inside of the flares.

Keep in mind that your experience may vary a little based on which tire you choose. They’re all sized a little different. It’s all very easy stuff to accomplish. Don’t feel intimidated. Let me know if you have any 1st gen/255 specific questions.

 

Thanks, rngr! I'll be spending a lot of time combing through your build. Was your lift before or after the tires?

My Tacoma is entirely a weekend warrior vehicle at this point. Camping, hunting, loading the kayaks, and runs to Home Depot and the dump. I love driving the truck, but I can't take clients out in it. I don't mind it getting a little bonkers with the build as money permits. One of my next projects is going to be removing the rear seats and trim and build a proper platform for the dogs with some storage underneath.

 

I did them at the same time. However, like someone mentioned, lift doesn’t affect how much you’ll rub when your suspension is compressed. At full bump, your tire is in the same position in the wheel well whether you have 0 or 3” of lift.

 

I'm really on the fence on this one. I'm not scared of bending the pinch welds, or trimming out plastic and doing a homemade washer fluid reservoir, but I'm without a garage to do it all in. Have to catch the odd sunny day to do work in the driveway.Today's Thank God We Finally Have Decent Weather Project is lighting work. Reconditioning the headlamps, swapping a busted backup aux 55w lamp for LEDs, and maybe, just maybe if I have time, installing ditch lights.

I have read and searched all pages and cant get a good answer. I have a stock 18 OR with 1.25 spacers. Can I run 255/85/16 on stock tires with that spacer without much rub? I like the tire but I also want a little wider stance. No lift right now. Can anyone help me out before I lose my mind?

 

Took it out finally. Rubbed 3 times since install. Twice pulling into a gas station and once making a simple right turn while on a trail. Have no idea how much I should be concerned about it.

 

Not sure if anyone can answer this or not, but here goes. I have a 2018 DCLB with Cooper STT's. 255/85/16 on stock off road wheels. If I do the OME coils, 5100's, and dakars in the back-will I rub? Do I need to get spacers for this, or will that hurt? I am under the impression that even though I don't rub right now if I lift the truck without changing wheels I may or will rub.

 

Depending on how your alignment is set, you'll PROBABLY rub in the back of the wheel well, either fender/mud guard/pinch weld/cab mount. You won't need spacers to clear the UCA or anything because they're narrower than your stocks.

 

So what do I do? trim the plastic?

 

Looks like you just made the swap I'm considering. Now that you've had them a while, what's the consensus on mpg loss?

I assume you got the E rated version? Wished they made the Maxx in C range.

 

Keep an eye on that long UCA bolt / nut. they have a bad habit of coming loose.
