Rear King shocks-EXT?

Hi All.
I am putting pieces of my lift together and I noticed 2 different part numbers for rear King 2.5 shocks.
There is 25001-121 and then theres 25001-121 EXT.
Down South Motorsports has these as well as All Pro. Everyone else online seems to have the regular 121's.

In what applications would the Extended version be needed?
I plan to run a 3 leaf progressive AAL for now, Dakars in the future when I eventually get a topper.

Im driving a 2018 DCSB OR.

one is extended the other not. are you lifting it?

 

Lifting, yes, as in AAL 1.5 in the rear maybe up to 2-2.5 in the future with a new leaf pack...And going with the King EXT 2.5 coilovers in the front. Thx!

Would I have screwed up if I got the non EXT? The non EXT rear Kings are still longer than stock shocks, arent they?

Can I ask, is there any reason why you want to go with a AAL now and replacement leafs in the future?

 

Hi, I am overly anxious and want to lift without saving for the leaf pack. Also, I plan a heavier load in the future a year or 2 out from now, (topper and gear). For now, my uses will be for everyday and fireroads, basically light off roading.

 

I understand the anxiousness but could I suggest you just wait to get your preferred setup?

I did something similar. Got nice shocks/springs with an AAL on the back. Ride sucked for about a year until I got deaver custom leaf springs. Looking back, I wish I had done it all at once. Regardless which route you go, make sure you know the approximate weight you’ll be hauling around regularly since custom leaf packs aren’t cheap but make a huge difference in ride quality IMO.

Also ride around with all the weight you’re thinking about adding and see how the brakes and acceleration are affected. You’ll soon be “needing” re-gear, súper charger (I’m sure magnuson will have one out in no time), and big brake kit upgrade. Good luck OP

 

Sorry let me elaborate. So your looking at getting the King 25001-121 setup in the rear. This to my understanding is built for about 1" of extra rear travel. The 121-EXT is for 2"-3" lift. So with your 1.5 AAL your kind of sitting in the middle of this. Neither would be ideal for your current goals. If you could hold just a little bit to get the 121-EXT and the Dakar's you want, this would be your preferred end goal.

The 095r gives you 2" lift with 0 weight and I think the 096r gives you 2" with ~600lbs. Please do not quote me on this its just off the top of my head. So if you purchase the 096r, remove the extra leaf which turns it into the 095r, you get the 2 inch lift your looking for. Adding weight? Add the leaf back in. No money spent on the AAL that will just sit in your garage in the future, nor the pain in the behind grinding off the rivets to fit it. The hassle it will save you in the future might save you some headaches and money in the future.

For an FYI, I purchased my Kings through DSM. They have an option for the 25001-121-Dakar where they are built for the leafs you have in mind. I went this route and it turned out really well.

BUHAHAHA. Truth is if I do the leaf pack now, I cant get the other mods I want to do right away. Im busted!! I base my future payload on a topper and weekend camping gear so maybe 400-500lbs. I had someone suggest the light duty version of the Dakars, not the HD's.

I know it might kinda suck to hear but I read every page of the King thread multiple times. This is an expensive upgrade and I researched it to all ends to make sure I was getting what I wanted.

It all depends where you get the Leaf pack from. I ordered them from @HeadStrong Off-Road with just the leafs. They have the best price I could find with free shipping. They came a little scrached up but I expected this from what others have said in this forum and hit it with some black rustoleum. I wanted to do a U-Bolt flip so I opted to just buy the leafs by themselves and save some money on the U-Bolts as I was already buying them separately with the flip kit. If you get the package it comes with everything you need, bushings ubolts etc etc.

 

OP Clearwater Bill put this pretty eloquently. I think hes missing +.01% to that number but yes, if you do it right the first time it will save you so much frustration in the future.
