91 or 89 octane?

I did a quick search and didn't find anything, so I apologize if this has a thread somewhere. Just was looking into the specs of my '18 TRD Taco OR. Apparently the 3.5L has a 11.8 compression ratio??!?! 87 is stated as acceptable. Was wondering if anyone has tried higher octane fuel to see if it would get better fuel mileage so the computer wouldn't be adjusting the timing so much to avoid detonation. Or maybe technology has surpassed this theory?

Anyway, thought I'd ask if anyone had tried. Thanks in advance.

You will get a slight increase in economy and performance by running 91. However, not enough to offset the additional costs of the 91 itself. 87 works just fine as these trucks are pretty smart.

I use 92. Mostly because my other car and motorcycles require 92 and I've made a habit of pumping 92. For the minor cost difference, it's peace of mind knowing that I'm not going to screw something up.

 

I too use 93, because it's required on my other vehicles. So I use it also in my taco as well. I avg about 23 to 24 all the time. I haven't done a long trip in it yet and probably won't be taking my truck if we do.

 

87 cause that’s what the manual says.

 

I don't think there's really much to gain by going above the grade of what manufacturer says to use. But then again I live in CA and spent $4.25/gal for Chevron where I live, it's insane.

 

87 octane for me. $3.50 per gallon is as high as I wanna go, while I can.

I use 89 octane non-ethanol with a few 93 octane fill ups when I want to splurge. Mileage and performance has been great. Get 20-22 around town and 24 on trips. Paid 3.19 per gallon today.

 

I've ran 85, 87, 88 ethanol free and 91 octane...and I've personally noticed no difference in how the truck drives or MPGs.

 

What about putting 87 in it and buying octane booster?

 

Just send me $6 every time you’d fill up and you’ll have the same effect.

I use 85 up here in high elevation. Noticed no difference from 87/91

 

The truck isn’t tuned from the factory to take advantage of higher octane fuels, there’s no real reason to use them.

 

neither. 87 like the manual states. go ahead if you like burning money. The engine wasn't designed to use the higher octane and thus will have no performance gain. you are not damaging the engine using a lower octane (again because that is what it was designed to use)

 

I finally found a station that had ethanol free so I filled up, didn't really notice any difference either other than the HPFP did not chirp.
