I noticed oil dripping from the back of the transmission where the trans meets the drive shaft.

Any thoughts on points of origin?

    What seal is failing?

    Is this a big issue?

its probably that seal that's weeping, although if the universal joint hasn't been greased or is a sealed unit that could cause the seal to prematurely start leaking if the needle bearings in the u joint caps aren't greased they will cause stress to other driveline components, or the seal could just be going bad.

Output/tail shaft seal. Time to replace it.
Good time to replace ujoints while you have the drive shaft out.

But the output seal is inside the housing right? so it would leak and drip straight down.

The seal is in the tailshaft. There was a TSB for the seal to install the new design. Mine was done in '11 and lasted a couple years before leaking again.
While you are driving, the trans fluid is seeping out of the seal and is being flung around the entire inside of the housing by the drive shaft cup. The oil then makes its way to the outside of the housing. While the majority (all while parked/stopped) will go straight down, the turbulant air under the truck combined with the wick effect of the dirt and porosity of the alumining will cause the oil to migrate. The migrating oil may go up and forward causing what you see.

makes sense. I can't seem to find a national seal part number.

Output shaft seal, fairly easy replacement, just did it 2 weeks ago. Make sure you have a seal puller as it is hard to get anything else in there.

Good call! I bought one when I changed my rear axle seal.

I bought this truck with 140k and have had no major issues.. but seals have a lifespan and i am getting the sense that most are toward the end. So I am getting familiar and used to changing seals. I just keep hoping that most are as simple and inexpensive as this one haha
