Need help with locating part number for washer fluid backing up

I had it for quite some time and it is annoying. When I pull the windshield washer stalk I hear the pump running but for second or so no liquid is coming out. After some delay the fluid starts spraying. I figure, there must be some check valve preventing the washer fluid from backing up back to the reservoir that is not working. I talked parts department guy in to local Toyota dealer and he showed me the diagram - no check valve I can buy.

Searching the Internet I only see the possible part number 85321-28020 that might be at the place circlet in the picture below. I'm visiting USA now 6 thousand miles away from my truck, so I can't verify it is the one.

Does anyone know where the check valve is and what part number it is? I just bought the set of Honda Odyssey sprayers so it would be nice if the rest of the system performs well too.

 

Don't think there is a check valve. Maybe in the pump itself...

Thanks Jon for checking. If the issue is inside the pump I can't justify to spend 75 dollars for a new one (85330-06031). I think I will just put some generic check valve in line somewhere close to the pump and call it a day.

 

Its not a check valve problem, it is probably your hose that is cracked or leaking somewhere. I just replaced my entire tank and nozzles yesterday, and had to prime the line by clamping the hose and running the pump for a few seconds, since the fluid in the hose mostly drained out when I disconnected the original res and pump.

If it starts to spray after a few seconds then the fluid is draining out somewhere slowly. New hose is cheap from the auto parts store. The res and pump I bought came with new hose, and it was around $30.

No leaks during or after spraying. All hoses down by the pump are dry. Then it must back up through the pump. I see no other logical explanation. I was sure that there was a check valve that went bad, but it looks like I was wrong.

By the way this res is wrong for my truck. Looks completly different (with long neck) and located down and front next to the bumper.

 

Yeah there's no check valve, just the pump & fluid level sensor if your model has it. Easy to check, disconnect the hose at the pump, spray & see if you get the delay. If yes then it's probably the pump. I hear some types of aftermarket wiper fluid can gum up the pump. Or if you're missing the mesh screen at the filler debris could have got in & clogged the pump. If no delay at the pump, disconnect at the Y fitting on the hood & see if you get delay. If yes, then your hose could probably be clogged up (not likely) or as mentioned, could be a leak in the hose. Might be able to try cleaning the pump too, I've never tried or needed to though so no idea.

They sell aftermarket replacement pumps that are much cheaper than the OEM one. The bottle type posted above is just a different type, called cold spec or something like that. It will work too if you don't have the cruise control box behind the intake, that's where it mounts. Lots of people with baja style bumpers swap to the cold spec one.

I had the same long neck res, and mine was starting to crack around the neck. I replaced it with the one that I linked above, as it was much cheaper, and I am planning on replacing the front bumper, so the oem one will have to go anyways.

 

does the truck's existing electrical just plug into this tank/pump?

 

Yes, it did on mine. I didn't have a low fluid sensor, so just the pump plugs in to the stock cable, and is plenty long.

 

FYI. The pump is the same for the last 30 years of Toyota trucks.

Go to a junk yard and ask for any Toyota truck washer fluid pump and it will be the same.

The washer pump in my 2009 Tundra came out of a 1984 Toyota pickup.

I rebuild Toyota trucks as a hobby and found this out during a previous build.

Sorry, forgot about this thread. So here is the update. I bought some check valve (generic) but I never used it. It turned out I don't need it. The simple fix to my problem was a side effect of replacing spray nozzles to Odyssey nozzles

Funny thing the same was with my truck, but that was about 10 years ago. Maybe the original was made of bad plastic? The whole tank was falling apart.
The original design tank (without a sensor) was not available, so I bough the long neck with a big hole for fluid level sensor. They told me to buy a sensor separately to plug that hole. Screw that. I plugged the hole with a piece of derlin I turned on my mini lathe and it's still there - no leaks. No cracks either so far.
