I’m thinking about going the same route. HD pack but pull out the overload. Those BP-51s?

 

What size of angle did you use? And how did you mount it?

Just the kind of comment I was looking for. I'm currently stock suspension, but have ordered a Southern Style Offroad Slimline. When I add the winch I'm going to need some coil overs on the front to even get it back level. So I'm now thinking that I'd like to go to a 3/2 lift to get level and add the Dakar HD to the back; primarily for towing. My thinking is that the HD is what I need if I want to stay level and more stable when towing fairly near the limit. With all that said, a couple of questions:

1) The fact that you are considering taking a leaf out post boat season implies that it rides rough without the boat. Could you describe just how stiff?

2) Did you pull the boat pre Dakar and if so did you find the heavier leaf pack made a substantial difference in towing? Could you describe that difference if any?

I don't think it's going to be practical for me to remove/add a leaf as I have two towing seasons (March-June and Sep-Dec).

Thank you! Definitely a great website with helpful advice. Speaking of which, I debaged the Tacoma in both doors and spray painted it red to match the tailgate and interior accents. Satisfied with the color, not so much with the quality ( wasn't a cheap brand). I planned on putting on a second coat tomorrow after work either way, but do you all think it will help the look of the texture?

6 SS Screws and washers about 3 bucks.

Came in a 3 foot section. Cut two pieces at 12 7/16. Lined everything up, measured some. Measured again. Penciled drill marks. Center punched them. Drilled pilot holes, then aligned the bracket up with the existing latch bracket assembly, made marks, center punched and drilled some holes.
For both I gradually drilled using the next size up. I used Stainless Steel sheet metal screws with rubber washers to mount them. The bracket when installed, meets up with the tailgate with a very small gap in between. It was perfect, as you can see in the picture. Once closed more the gap closes. I just had it out a little more so you can see better. Overall a great and easy mod that increases the security of the BakFlip tremendously.

Update:
I 3-D printed a collar to hold the shifter boot instead of the grommet. I got the file from @duckytw . Looks much cleaner.

 

Picked up a used clean ARE V-Series topper, for $600.

 

Thanks! I work at a place where I can get all of that pretty easily. I will have to check to see how quick I can get the parts.

No problem. I took my time and it took me about an hour and a half from start to finish. Using all hand tools. Let me know how it goes!

 

1. It rides stiff with out the boat. (But.....I can adjust my BP 51’s on the fly. Im surprised at how adjustments make such as difference. Its suprisingly smooth on highway, but definetly feels stiff around town.) Kinda like riding in a F350 with nothing in the bed. If you plan on driving around all the time with nothing in the bed not sure I’d go with the HD pack.

2. I did pull the boat before the Dakar’s (and BP-51’s). Factory leaf pack, and blistein coil overs. My ass end sagged and I felt like I lost traction up front. I also felt all those breaks in the highway, the ones every 20’ feet. Not as confident as I am now.

Full disclosure, I’m building my rig for Off-roading/camping/hunting and towing boat. It’s not my daily driver. “Daily driver” comfort isn’t a real priority for me.

Check this video out. Shows how easy it is to get into a BAKFLIP cover without some sort of blocking mechanism. For an extra 14 bucks and some time it makes the BakFlip worth it!
