3rd Gen Car Hauling Question

Has anyone towed a other vehicle with their Tacoma? I’ve towed things with my truck before but never anything like this. I’m looking to make a move and was thinking of towing the gf’s civic.

Attempting to do research now to see if that is possible, but don’t have access to my truck as I’m a semi driver and currently out over the road.

That being said I can’t see my hitch or door sticker. But I have an aftermarket hitch by Curt which looks to be rated at 6,000 lbs. Her car weighs about 2,300 lbs.

My truck is an SR5 DCSB 2x4 2.7L 4-cyl.

Are you flat towing or on a trailer? Either way really, you'll be under the limit with the 1,000lb trailer and 2,300lb Civic.

 

Not sure yet about which trailer to use. I think a trailer would be ideal. It’s normally a 12 hour drive. Not too sure on the exact trailer weight since I’m renting the trailer, but 1,000 seems about right. Here is a reference photo for the two trailers.

 

Do the tow dolly. I own both. The dolly is very user friendly.

My car hauler is for vehicles that don't run or there is no way to disconnect the drive line.

I see lots of pictures in the towing thread of second gens hauling cars. Just curious if anyone had issues with the tranny on these new trucks while hauling.

So that concerns me a bit...

 

You just won't be winning any races. Run slower and in a lower gear to keep engine/transmission temps under control.

Get a scan gauge II to know what is really going on with the truck.

The max towing rating on the 4 banger is 3500lbs. Use the dolly and you'll be ok.

 

I'm the same boat!! 1000 plus miles corola to tow, 2017 4cy 5 speed 4x4, wondering if I should lol might do a test run around town and Highway to get a feel for it, her father has a dolly, but will rent one for all is good for the move from NH to Georgia.

Use the trailer, not the dolly.

I've used both. The dolly likes to tear off bumpers of smaller vehicles. It didn't work well on the Honda I used it with. It also has a swivel axle which means it's impossible to back up with it unless you grew up on a farm and have practice with grain wagons. The trailer probably weighs more though so if you're pushing the max GVWR that's something to keep in mind.

There is a 3rd gen towing thread somewhere around here and I’ve seen people haul some pretty large camping trailers in there, so I think you’ll be fine. Everything I have towed so far has been barely noticeable.

The 4 cylinder tow rating is only 3500lb. The Uhaul trailer is 2200lb. That and a car is too heavy.

The trailer is a much better way to go mostly because it has brakes. Surge brakes but brakes none the less. The dolly is fine but without the extra braking capacity it will take a fair amount more distance to stop, and panic stopping is non-existent.

If you've never towed a heavy load before, just be careful before you decide to do anything. A Civic is not a big load for most trucks, but it is heavy for your tow rating. Good luck.

 

To answer my own question, yes, you can tow a car long distance with a 2.7L 4-cyl.

No issues here.

How did it tow, where to where was it going.

 

I have a 1998 2.7l Auto and I towed my Honda Civic about 120 miles with it. No issue. Payload was about 3,600 pounds.

It went well. It was Illinois to North Carolina. Took about 14 hours with stops

 

Gives me hope for when I get my 12 foot enclosed trailer. Not sure how my 4 banger would take it and don't always want to use the other taco
