 yeah that's a positive outlook to it but hearing about that great-grandma and her grand kids losing their lives saddened me a lot.

does the derp last? Or will it be peeling off after a Maine winter?

Yah...very sad/tragic. Can't even imagine the conditions in which those firefighters are working. Must be like hell on earth. Kudos to those heroes!

No road trip for us. We're flying into Anchorage, then onto a small town called Dillingham. From there we get on a float plane for another hour and a half, get dropped off and then picked up 65 miles downriver 12 days later.

I'm going to attempt a nice comprehensive Trip Report once I get back. It'll be posted here.

Mine lasted through a Baltimore winter. If someone in New Mexico says Snow Cone in September they spread salt here.

Well, that's like a quarter winter in Maine but I bet we use 8 times as much salt here. I'm genuinely embarrassed by the news reporters here most of the time.

No lie, true story, we only watch the news in the morning for the traffic and weather before leaving for work. One day they were reporting bad fog. I was in the other room so I could hear the tv. They had reporters scattered around Maryland and one was up in my neck of the woods at a shopping mall with the fancy mobile weather tracker.

The report went something like this: " Visibility is down to less than a quarter of a mile............bla bla bla". I happened to walk in the room and saw the tv. The mall that was like 3 miles away across the road was in freaking plain sight!!!! I was WTF are they they talking about.?!

Same way with all the elements. Snow is the worst. I mean, up in the country, it only takes a couple inches of frozen slush to make things bad. Rain, well, we have gotten nearly 16 inches at BWI this month. I think we're about to break a record. But yea, I have a friend here at work and his parent live up there. He shows me pics. We've have "feet" only a couple times in my life. 3 o 4 max. Which is why I don't live in Maine or Minnesota.
