Homemade skid plates?

Here's a semi up to date picture of my skids. Built the transmission skid much faster than the IFS skid. In addition to the current crossmember on the transmission skid, I add another that forms an X. I also match drilled two holes to bolt the IFS and transmission skid together using Grade 8 bolts.

 

Anyone know what sizes the OEM/aftermarket bolts are for the skids?

I am working on a CAD rendering the front IFS Skid.

I’ll get some measurements on it for you once I get home. I’ve been meaning to do my own CAD drawing for my skids to keep for future builds too. Are you able to open solidworks files? I may could make a quick sketch on Monday for you.

 

I've been working in TinkerCAD so I can import the following file types.
.stl
.obj
.svg

I also have SketchUp not sure if it can open solidworks files. Don't use it very much cause I can use TinkerCAD from any computer.

 

Solidworks can export as a .sldprt, .dwg, or .stl.

Edit: I'm actually certified in Solidworks, but my license expired on my home computer.

 

I'll gladly take the file too please. I have solidworks and thinkdesign so I'll change the tire and send it to whomever needs it

Kinda hard to see because of the black paint but here is my final product for my IFS and mid skids painted and installed.

 

So here are the plans I initially drew up for my skids. Was going to build a one piece skid from front to the transmission cross member however that proved to be too heavy to manage as a single person mounting it to my truck during various test fits. Some of the measurements were left out due to the test fits being the driving factor for where certain things were places and where holes needed to be drilled. Some measurements are also not 100% accurate since test fits made me change things after drawing these plans up. If you have any questions feel free to ask. This drawing is far from what I produce professionally and is lacking quite a bit so don't criticize too much. Lol.

 

I'd be interested in the CAD drawing as well. Skids are my next project. The more I look at my undercarriage, the more I cringe at my exposed trany pan.

A stupid question, though, it looks like your designs generally mount to the lower OEM bumper support, is that right? How would you expect this to work with an aftermarket bumper? I'm looking at doing a NWTrailInnovations DIY front bumper and it's not real clear how they mount up.

Maybe I just need to do the trany skid for now, then when I finish a bumper, mount the IFS skid to it...

 

Most Aftermarket bumpers tie into the OEM skid bolt locations.

Sounds like I need to just go for the trany skid, then worry about the IFS skid when I build the bumper.

Thank you. Do you recall the total length you ended up with?

 

No problem. I’ll have to measure that. When I decided to keep it as two separate sections I measured, marked and forgot. Lol. I’ll measure it out for you tomorrow.

Needs some tweaking as measurements are mostly close guesses when I changed it from the previous version. Once I get measurements closer I will link a downloadable version.
