Looking for ideas or suggestions on best way to haul kayaks. I have a 2017 TRD off road short bed with a cover that I would like to keep. Would really like to find a rack that would work. Thanks in advance for your help.

    How long is your Kayak?

I have the short bed and my 10ft long Kayak fits just fine if you angle it diagonally from the back corner of the bed towards the front. Sticks out maybe 2 feet to the side of the truck, pointing to the air when the gate is closed up.

11' I think. Hauled both of them yesterday with the tail gate down. Worked fine just looking for a better way. I like the bed racks but boy they are proud of those things.

I carry two double 18-footers in my shortbed (folding sea kayaks), but I used to have a hardshell river kayak and a canoe. If you want a inexpensive steel rack that isn’t PVC , HF or Smittybilt have contractors racks for about $300 ($240 if you use a 20% off HF coupon) that can be modified for what you may want...

Yakima landing pad 11 bolts right into factory rack hardpoint, even includes hardware but you’ll want to rtv the holes lol
Add Yakima control towers and a round bar
A hitch bed extender for the rear, you’ll want the hitch tightener to lock it all together

I have a 11.5 ft that I just strap in my 5 ft bed. Fold my trifold cover back. No bed extender and I don't think necessary unless you are traveling long distance. Just put a flag on the back.

I've been carrying fishing kayaks in truck beds for a long time. I think the truck bed extender like in the above posts are one of the best ways unless you want to get/mod a trailer. I've seen folks build a "rack/stand" that they put in their beds to stack them.

Now I have customized a cheap john boat trailer so I can just use a boat ramp and do not need to carry it at all.

I replaced the spare with the correct size since the pics.

The Harbor Freight trailers work great for 'yak trailers. I've built several.mv02_pZvy6qlsae_L-O89lB9-uyskFpengcMuQ5u_b9c00a111373d2013b4501cde0c8803b7723461b.jpg

What rack are you running? Is it all connected or do you have a separate one on the roof?

Looks like a prinsu on the roof and I’m unsure of what’s on the rear. Two separate pieces.

    Dissent offroad @Dissent86
Roof rack and bed rack. They are aluminum and very well built, yet extremely light.
    The kayak equipment is Yakima.
    Landing pads, saddles and rollers.
The crossbars click off in less then two minutes .

I will second that. The Dissent rack is awesome! I've had mine for about 2 months now and love it.

I'm curious if you can share how you mounted both of those kayak systems to it. I have a set of Yakima J Lows, the J cradle type that fold down. Their clamping mechanism doesn't open wide enough to fit the crossbars on the rack, so I have been trying to decide how to modify them or what system to change to.

For my 10' Dagger, I simply put the tailgate down, flip the bed extender onto the tailgate, and throw the kayak in the bed resting on the extender. A couple of bungees from the tiedown just behind the cockpit to the factory bed tiedowns and its not going anywhere. If I need to, I can pack gear in around the yak in the bed.

Of course this may all change because I'm looking at a tandem to get my 8-year old daughter out on the water. Will be renting one on vacation the end of the month to see if she likes it before I pull the trigger.
