I'm actually pretty surprised at the salt use in MA since they won't let anyone use a plastic bag, you think they would avoid unnecessary poisoning of the land and rivers. Sand works just fine IMO.

And then complain when they go over their plow/salt budget every year...just like every other town in the county, and most likely the state.

No, and to be honest I haven't even went far into the Savoy S.F. since I was a kid on my dirtbike and go cart. My wife and I know we should hike some more trails around here and just get out more, but it's hard when we can just walk out of the house and enjoy a lot of the same things without the travel time.

Yeah, sometimes we don't realize what is in our "backyard". Happens all the time.
MTSF is worth a little visit, if you get a chance. I was really blown away by the area. Was looking for a way into some fish and got distracted by the hike. :anonymous:

Have you been to Tannery Falls?

There are a lot of areas around here where they don't use a lot of salt. A lot of the areas that directly run off into reservoirs you'll see signs 'limited salt use area'.

Yeah, Tannery is so close we can't not go. I was actually thinking of going this week since we have had all the rain it should be good right now. My parents went Sunday and said it was sort of packed...well for Tannery Falls. MTSF is super close too, so maybe once we cool down a little I can go check it out. I have a buddy in Florida Mnt who likes to go on hikes, he'd probably join me.

Thats good to know, everywhere I drive they use a lot of it, except in the places that are too rural and they figure you should have 4wd. I have seen some of those signs though, I always thought they were because there is less traffic, not due to the run-off.

I'm surprised my town uses salt, especially near me. The river is right there. They even pour salt on the bridge...I feel it's unnecessary, we're a pretty rural town and I'm sure we're all capable of driving on some snow.

I also kind of want to go to the annual town meeting and try to strike the street lights from the budget, but I think I'd be looked at like I was nuts.

    Lots of sail boat fuel
I mean they say they treat the roads in the Manchester hooksett area in NH, but the inch of ice at 12am when Im driving into work says otherwise.

If you have seen the budget for Pittsfields lights, and the cost to go LED etc... you might find more support than you think if people knew what it actually cost. They might not totally ditch them, but maybe on some of the further out sections of town they wouldn't mind it.

You might be surprised. We have a growing movement in my town that wants to eliminate the police department from the town budget stating they are not necessary.

Blanford MA's whole force just quit! Due to unsafe gear etc... Where I live we have a few part time guys, and there are plenty of us that want to get rid of them. I am behind the police, but there really isn't anything to do for them in this town but harass people for riding their 4wheeler to the store. And that's been going on longer than I've been alive.

The town I have my business in and will be moving to this spring, wants to get rid of the elementary school because it's like 60% of the town budget. Obviously there is a lot of people who want to keep it, but some people might be surprised at the amount of those who want to ditch it.

We have a few people starting to talk about that too. I guess we're around 90k in police salaries for a town of 1600 people and they've talked about how NA or State would be up here before any of our local guys would most of the time.

I have to be careful of that, though, because I speak on things like that too much and it'll start to look like I have an issue with police in general. I recently found out that police in another town near here are frequently using their personal vehicles with blue lights to stop people--one guy has a take home cruiser and I never see it move from his driveway. It seems bogus to me that anyone would have approved that so I'm seeing if they have permits for them or not. Imagine getting pulled over by something that looks nothing like a police vehicle in a tiny hill town at night and being approached by a guy out of uniform? No part of that sounds reasonable to me.
