The oil pressure warning light should be lit full time with that sending unit disconnected.

Mine dropped 2 changes ago. Took the skids off and flash lighted everywhere I could get an eyeball on and didn't find it. I use a paper towel and soak up whatever didn't drip out into the plastic bottle I stick underneath and so far so good.

Mostly stock with a few minor mods.
Something odd is going on then. I'd say someone did something along the line. It ain't right. That's for sure.

Any advice ? There's no issues ATM but should I be concerned? .im sure by now if there was an oil pressure issue I'd have engine failure or high temps on the temp gauge.it's been plugged back in for the last 800km and no issues or lights

No worries regarding engine problems, the ECM doesn't report oil pressure so it's not likely that it affected engine performance at all. But I'd unplug it to verify the oil pressure warning light activates...just to ensure you have that warning available if needed.

With the connector connected, does the oil can light come on when you turn on the key without starting it? How about with it disconnected?

The oil pressure switch is a normally closed switch one end is connected to ground and the other lead comes from the Combination meter. When the engine is running and Oil Pressure is proper the switch opens.

With the engine off the switch should read a short between the terminals of the switch. With the engine running the switch should read open between the terminals on the switch.

That is why it doesn't light up when it is disconnected. If you short the two wires in the plug the Oil LED will light. Your system seems to be operating normally.

The only thing that the switch does is illuminate the little oil can LED in the dash. It doesn't go anywhere else.

12 VDC to Combination Meter to Oil LED to Pressure Switch to Ground.

when Turning the key to on the oil light comes on with sensor connected but does not come on with sensor disconnected .but also no oil light when truck is running with sensor disconnected .did Toyota design this sensor like this ?that with it disconnected the driver wouldn't know they had an oil pressure issue

Why should Toyota predict that someone would disconnect the oil pressure sending unit? They can't put a light on the dash for every stupid thing that someone might do.

Your oil light is working correctly.

Yes. It is only an idiot light.

With the engine NOT Running the switch is closed to ground completing the current path to light up the Oil Can LED in the dash.

With the engine Running the oil pressure opens the switch disconnecting the ground and the current path for the Oil Can LED in the dash is open and the LED is Off.

Knowing this much about the circuit it is obvious that with the connector disconnected the circuit is open and there is no current path to ground and the LED cannot light.

And you are also correct that if the connector is disconnected and the oil pressure is lost you will not know until it is too late and the engine is damaged.

Easy solution is that you check when you start the engine that the lamp comes on and when started it goes off. That will tell the tale as with the connector disconnected the LED will never light.

    Yeah.
Funny, that hasn't changed in years. My '77 Celica works exactly the same way.

Well if you disconnect a o2 sensor you will have a continuous engine light but if you disconnected oil pressure sensor there no continuous oil light

That's the way oil pressure idiot lights have always been. The computer monitors the o2 sensor. The computer doesn't care if the engine has oil pressure. The computer doesn't care if the lug nuts are loose. The computer doesn't care if the windshields cracked. The computer doesn't care if you remove the doors. It will be a sad day when a computer controls the oil pressure light.
