That is exactly what my 2016 was doing when I drove it off the lot.

I asked them to physically check the trans fluid..... They said NO. I did it myself the low and behold I was down 1 1/2 qt.s

That stopped the cruise control holding gears .... Then I had the 2 TSB's added and they cleared out the other small issues I had with it.

    I recommend a physical fluid check...

I believe that the 2018’s were already addressed with that issue!

Add another one to the pile. However, that harsh shift only happens when I have the trans in S2. It won’t do it in any other gear in S mode, and it drives like a dream in D. Go figure.

Ah, mine does it in D mainly. That could be because I rarely use S mode. I have been shifting to neutral when coming to stoplights lately as well. Smooth as silk in neutral haha

My 2018 actually does okay in cruise control. It will downshift on a hill, but will shift back up to 6th on the way down. Yeah, it takes a few seconds to shift back but not like what some people are dealing with.

I have a 2.7 with no cruise in auto Just hit 5 k miles trick is running great and shifts proper. Is the tranny the same as the v6 would seem the 4 banger would be worse off not better.

My '18 SR5 has been a great truck so far. Cruise control works great. TSS has saved me a couple of times already. The 4x4 system is bad ass. TRAC and ALSD are the stuffings. However, it does have some of the "small" documented issues posted here, but they don't bother me to the point I hate the truck, or I don't want to get in it, or it forces me to pay too much attention to that kind of stuff. On the contrary. I can't wait to get in it. I'm enjoying the drivetrain a lot. It rides very nice. It has good torque down low and mid, and is wild up top. The city gas mileage is not bad also. Overall, it's been my favorite Taco of the 5 I've owned.

On a side note, I thought the 3rd Gen trans had the automatic engine brake. It has only come one once in a blue moon. Which led me to read the manual, and if I'm not mistaken, the engine braking is now done manually in S mode? That's how I actually found out about the S2 to S1 harsh shift. I was manually shifting S mode to engine brake and left it in S2 coming to a stop. It doesn't change harshly until the truck is going below 10mph or so. So I've learned just to switch it back to D before that point as I don't need it in S mode anymore. I actually prefer to manually engine brake, seems like there is more control.

How is your fuel economy? I was on the hook with a Trd Pro manual, but I really needed a long box. I really love my truck, but I think that we need to get it’s couple issues fixed. I know Toyota has always gone good for issues, trucks are still getting new frames as we speak.

I’ve only ran out 2 tanks since I got it.... over 16 both tanks but I pull a 6x8 enclosed trailer some with both tanks and a open trailer with 2 dirtbikes some to..... it looks like right around 18 is gonna be my everyday routine mileage average.... I absolutely love it though. Came from a 06 2.7 mt access can so the extra room and power is great!!

I just pm'd you. You can go back and read through my posts. Toyota bought my pos back and they didn't have me sign the NDA so i was pretty vocal how crappy this powertrain pairing is. I just wanted to tell you about my cleveland to Tampa drive i did this winter. My truck rarely made it into 6th and rarely stayed there. Through the mountains of KY and TN my truck probably shifted 6-8x per minute! I took 40+ minutes of video of my truck in southern Georgia/ northern Florida where i was driving downhill and it still wouldn't go into 6th. I averaged 14.4 mpg on that trip at 67mph to 69mph. I estimate that my truck shifted between 6, 5, 4 and 3rd approximately 3000 times. Seriously.

Personally I've been happy with rev1 from two years ago. But seems to fix things for those that considered OV tune and the like.

Yeah I have this issue. My truck gets awful MPGs on the highway when cruise control is engaged because the truck always wants to downshift from 6th to 4th in situations for which its unnecessary. Then the tyranny hangs out there forever. Cruise control in my truck is great at maintaining speed but not so great on my gas tank. Never had a cruise control that was programmed this way. It's behavior would make sense in a towing situation but not for everyday use. That 22 mpg highway claim by Toyota is totally bogus when using cruise control. I'm lucky to average even 20 with cruise turned on.

These trucks make no power at less that 2000rpm, which is where 6th gear tries to keep it at highway speed.

The engine and transmission are like this couple I knew in high school... neither one was inherently bad, but put em together and you wanted to strangle both of them. If you tried to step in and help them out (cruise control) and things got so goofy that you just said screw it.

I'd agree about the frames. Toyota really fought fixing the sludge issue they had with the V6 (Camry) a while back.
Yeah, the shift sense pro engineer mapped out the torque curves of the engine and the gear spacing, throttle inputs and all kinds of other stuff. It makes you scratch your head how/why Toyota did this. Obviously for mpg claims. But be careful, @EdgeCrusher would claim everything is sunshine and unicorns. That chick gets defensive about her perfect truck.
