    I've had a "hobby mill" for years that is fully capable of machining aluminum. But, it (like a 3D printer) is not a microwave that you punch a few buttons on and a part pops out. Its complex and finicky. You have to zero the axis. You have to know how to program tool paths and have software to convert models to machine useable files. You have to know what feeds and speeds the machine is capable of in the medium being used.

    A 3D printer is no different.

    Your average run of the mill felon is not going to be able to buy a machine, download a file and make a firearm.

    Oh, and as long as bullets are made of brass and lead, there is no way plastic guns wont set off a metal detector.
