Yes 15-30 seconds is good. You said to just start it up and go as quick as you can. But you’re putting strain on the upper end of the engine if you just start and go. You need to let the oil that has drained down to the pan get pumped back up to the top of the engine. Let her valves get lubed up and then punch it.

 

Ok for me 15-30 seconds (putting seat belt on, adjust radio, etc) is pretty much start up and go especially with synthetic oil that flows at -30F.

I’m just not a fan of letting the car idle in the driveway for 20 minutes while it “warms” up.

 

Precisely. The only people doing that for 20min are living in -29F and want the heater cranked before getting in.

Some things wear out with age regardless of miles. I'd rather buy a 1 year old used truck with 50K on it than a 5 year old truck with 50K on it.

I'm in NY which is a heavy rust state so 50,000 in 1 year is on all brand new pristine parts, now at 50,000 miles in 5 years theres a lot of corrosion that's set in, dry rot etc so for my climate 1 year old is in way better shape. I agree to get that high of miles in 1 year there mostly highway miles, which are way easier on the vehicle wear and tear wise vs city stop and go and not getting to proper operating temps etc which leads to water buildup, condensation in the oil and exhaust systems. Allso that's a lot of fresh fuel going thrue that engine. Nowadays with ethanol fuel pulling moisture from the air having gas sit in your tank for a month at a time is not ideal.

Your not a Upstate New Yorker if you haven't driven at least 50 miles in a blizzard in 4H.

 

I'm fortunate enough that I don't have to sell my old car to get a new one. My wife and I have given away the last four vehicles (to family members who needed them) instead of selling, but we drive the piss out of them first. The youngest one was 9 years old when we gave it away. In fact, the only reason I gave my '88 Toy p/u away is because the windshield was almost falling out from rust, so I gave it to my nephew who lives in a very dry climate.

 

Totally agree!! That’s why I got the 4runner I wanted, I’m keeping it at least 30 years!
