You hit the nail on the head. They're often referred to as "store picks", but it is exactly what you say. A group (often a liquor store, but not always) will commit to buy a whole barrel. Then they get to visit the rickhouse and sample from a given number of barrels and pick the one they like best. Provided the person doing the picking knows what they're doing and that their palate isn't way different from yours, you should be getting some of the best of the bunch. I have a handful myself. I don't specifically hunt for them, but usually snag one if I find a store pick of a bourbon I like!

Did you crack open the Buffalo Trace pick, yet? How is it?!?!?

LOL...dumb question...It's almost gone. It is/was very good. I think I will go get a full case of it this week.
They also got a barrel of Blanton's. I may pick up one of those also.

    That's great .

Blanton's is like candy. Nothing challenging to it, but smooth and sweet. Worth grabbing a bottle while you can. Nice deal that you can grab a case of store pick BT!

Blanton's is just ok, to me. It's just not worth what it cost's, IMO. I've had the same bottle for almost 18 months.

The first 2 bottles I ever had were awesome. I went back even after the 3rd then 4th were just ok. Now on my 5th and still meh. I still have one bottle unopened... I guess it's the lottery you play with single barrel bourbon. Think I'm done playing that game tho - $60 is just too pricey.

Got this today, new arrival in the local communist lcbo. Reasonably priced, yanno for a govt run monopoly, at $39.

It's not bad, for a daily driver mix up

Edit: apologies for the large format photo. Dunno how to downsize that before upload

My buddy mentioned Weller as a good “daily” bottle. He gets his from the liquor store at Costco for around $30 I think, need to check it out

Weller is nowhere to be found around me. My store said maybe November. I've never had it but have always heard it is good, especially the Weller 12. Is that Special Reserve a screw-top??

Blanton's is pretty good. Not worth the hype or the secondary prices, but I'll buy a bottle anytime I find one. When I say it is like candy, I mean it is very sweet and ultra smooth. Not my typical style of bourbon (I prefer high spice barrel proof stuff), but a nice change of pace.

Weller Special Reserve, Weller Antique 107, and Weller 12 are all screw tops. Now that you mention it, the CYPB that just released is a screw top, too. I like the 12 the best, but only barely more than the Special Reserve. Not a fan of the Antique 107. I tasted the Antique 107 and the 12, decided neither was worth preserving, so I blended them in to Poor Man's Pappy. Definitely better than the sum of its parts. I keep a bottle of Special Reserve on hand almost all of the time. It's a wheater that I enjoy neat, but is cheap enough that I don't care if people mix it.

Speaking of screw tops, nearly every Japanese whisky I've ever had is a screw top. I say nearly, because I got a bottle of Hibiki Japanese Harmony recently and it was the first Japanese whisky that I've had that was corked. Frankly, while it isn't as fancy, a good screw top makes more sense to me.

Crown's my only screw top so far(though that's pretty low end stuff). Balvenie 12 yr and the Hibiki as you said are both corked. I haven't owned any others yet.

Picking up a scotch for a buddy's housewarming gift tomorrow. I've gifted him Glenfarclas and Macallan expressions in the past. He likes Compass Box stuff, but I'm trying to expand his horizons a bit. Last time we met up, he had some Lagavulin 16 and loved the stuff, so peat is definitely top of mind.

Looking to spend between $50-100. I'll open up to the floor for suggestions. Thinking whatever Ardbeg I can get in that range? Talisker?
