My Tacoma is my first ever new car purchase so I’m not really well versed in the potiental for things to turn bad after factory warranties are up.

I purchased an extended warranty through my credit union as part of the financing the truck (they provided much better rates on the loan than Toyota). I’ve seen heard some things that have me leaning towards those aren’t the best and the Toyota one is better since you take right to them.

Is this true when it comes to the extended warranties? Also is it possible to purchase a Toyota extended warranty after the fact? Truck is a year old with 9900 miles.

You have 36 months to purchase it (the length of the factory warranty). And yes, it would be better to have a factory warranty or at least whatever your dealership deals with on the regular.
Some people will argue that you should just save that money and use it for repairs but it's really all just hedging bets.

The extended warranty I purchased added 1k to my loan. I can’t imagine any repair that would need warranty work to cost less than 1k.

What's the terms of the warranty?
Also consider the hassle of dealing with a third party in authorizing and paying for repairs. Here in the SE (I'm in FL too), the dealers will not sell you an actual Toyota warranty. They use another company, but it is one they deal with often and they do all the paperwork for you. You "can" get a real Toyota warranty if you like which is what I'm gonna do.

What’s the best way to go about that? I’m thinking of it as I’m at 1 year already.

The major upside to to aftermarket warranty (i had National previously) is that you can take the truck to any independent repair facility, not just the dealership.

I got the 7 year/125k mile Toyotacare package. It's an extended warranty but also came with a few additional features : free key fob replacement, free dent repair, 3 additional services, and another thing i can't remember.

Extended warranties are always a money making add-on for the dealer but it seemed worth the $750 they charged me.

I thought ToyotaCare was just a maintenance plan, not a warranty.

For what it's worth there is an article floating around out there on how extended warranties are never worth the money... something like 55% of people who buy them never end up using it. Since you already have one through your CU, I wouldn't go about trying to get yet another warrenty. The only thing I wished I would've done was bought a protective coating for the front end.. just got a small rock chip this morning from the damn semi trucks that drive way too fast on city streets .

I use the Geico plan that pays for repairs with a $250 deductible. Covers me for the big things I can't pay for, costs $8 a month and will cover the vehicle through 150,000 miles at any repair facility. I'll never spend even what the cheapest plans cost at the stealership and best of all...no finance charges being compounded on an already expensive plan.

Yes you are correct. I misspoke. ToyotaCare was included with the warranty plan I bought.

After the dealership screwed up the first oil change on my Tacoma, I demanded the 10 year/125K Platinum warranty, and they gave it to me. The truck is still new so I haven't used it yet.

How did they screw up? I'm about due for my first service and I'm considering just doing the work myself...

I elected to pay for an oil change when I took the truck in for the 5K service/inspection. I left the dealership, drove errands for about 100 miles, then went home. After an hour I noticed oil dripping, and when I checked the dipstick it was dry.

I called the service manager and they towed it back, did another oil change, and promised me the engine was fine. Service manager admitted that the "tech" (if you can call him that) overtightened the drain bolt, warped the crush washer, and caused the leak; so they took responsibility for the problem.

Long story short, I don't believe they were honest about how much oil was actually in the engine when the truck went back to the dealership, and I made a big deal out of it. I was concerned that the engine would have long-term damage, so I demanded the warranty. They gave it to me.

That was my first Toyota service experience.

Exactly and buying extended warranties is betting severely against the odds. They should only be considered if significant issues have been had within the standard warranty time frame in my opinion. And in that case one should attempt to get it for free from Toyota.
