Any time I have to open a wall like that I take copious pictures for reference. I keep a photo album just for pictures like this. Makes identifying hidden things easier later down the road like studs, plumbing, electrical.

Preciseamundo. There was a small amount of mold hidden behind and under cabinets at this location found during inspection. I had the owner open it up rear the obvious suspect, washing machine drain/valve box. Mold was negligible once open and the source was obvious, looked like the drain most have popped out at some point and gotten the wall damp. It was bone dry in there and no leaks. But the supply valves were corroding old gate types installed in a peculiar manner, so I said leave it open and I'll deal, and installed quarter-turn ball valves for supply. Then I discovered the dryer vent fiasco when I investigated installing a dryer box. Found a concealed break in the vent between floors, and we tore open all the rest of the wall to the right and into the upper crawl area....yay.

I really wanted to relocate the wall switch closer to the door, but look at that damn post, and can you believe it, there is a copper supply pipe nested in that narrow vertical gap between the post and another stud. Would have been a ton of work, and many other things were breaking (like my will to live) as we moved and sold the other house, 2YO toddler in tow...

And those light switches still piss me off every time I go int there. :annoyed:

Little update... Got the walls all painted after pulling off the wainscoting and repairing the damage that caused. Then demo'd the kitchen backsplash in preparation for the new counter top install next week.

This is what nightmares are made of. Every time I start a project I worry that something like this will happen. Looks great - I just went with the same delta fixtures for my bath renovation last month, but matte black. My god, between the tub color, the floor pattern, that weird step thing, and the glass block, the before was just fugly.

I thought I had a problem but looking at the photos above I feel much better about my situation LOL.

I recently bought a home and am in the process of replacing the flooring in each room. I just finished engeneered wood floors in the main living space and master.

Now its time for the master bath.

    I need some advice.

The house is a ranch on a concrete slab and is 12 years old. It has a linoleum floor and the toilet had a previous water leak so you can see black staining around the flooring along base of the toilet and it has an odor.

The smell is not horrible but it grosses me out and I have allergies.

I was thinking of just ripping up the linoleum and living on the concrete floor for a month or so until I lay the new tile floor just to get rid of the smell but would that make it worse?

Am I better off leaving it be until I redo the floor?

Also when I do redo the floor do I need to worry about any type of mold remediation/special cleaning??
I plan on removing the toilet when I redo the floor.

Just to be clear there is no active leak in the bathroom. It was resolved.
