Spot on. In that case I don't want Spanish to be an option on my phone calls either. Since the beginning of America we have said in God We Trust. Why is that an issue now?

"No amendment shall be made to the Constitution which will authorize or give to Congress the power to abolish or interfere, within any State, with the domestic institutions thereof, including that of persons held to labor or service by the laws of said State."
The law, then trampled on by The Federal Gov. Even way back then.

Oh and please keep in mind that the north after they won still had slaves. So does our American flag stand for Slavery, or trampling the constitution? Look at what we are allowing them to do today with trying to remove or weapons.

I'll fly my flag, carry my guns, say Merry Christmas, and pray to God until I die! Especially if my government will give more rights to foreigners than me.

No, but it can be a sign that the owner of the flag is a redneck. At least in the Midwest anyway.

germany and japan (along with dozens of other nations) have been America's enemy at some point, should we forbid those flag from being flown in the US?

i'm assuming you've never lived in the south. you find me a true good ole boy who doesn't love America and i'll agree with you that the rebel flag is racist. southerners are raised to be patriotic above all else but we are also raised to be proud of our heritage.

The Union is meant to be a symbiotic relationship. its not common practice for states to secede but they have the right to do so if they feel their association with the Union is no longer beneficial or if they feel the federal government is overstepping its bounds, which is exactly what happened in the civil war. Nowhere in the Constitution is there any mention of the union of the states being permanent. The Articles of Confederation mentioned "permanance" but 11 of the 13 original colonies decided to scrap the original articles in favor of what we see today.

    damn fine post

well thats the thing, you cant take people's identity from them and identity includes heritage and history. just because it bothers some people does not give anyone the right to take away my heritage or anyone elses.

Let's remember "The North" isn't just NYC/Boston/Philly and "The South" isn't just some cotton fields and Texas.

I'm from VT which has the country's highest rate of military service and ZERO laws restricting gun ownership, hardly what you would associate with "The North."

Point being: our country is much bigger, more diverse and complex than it was in 1861-1865. Maybe it's time to stop the North vs. South shouting match, since there's no bright line dividing us anymore.

For what it's worth: it's a free country. Fly whatever flag you want. I'll keep my thoughts to myself.

extremely good post. the only part i have an issue with is where you say farmers treated slaves like family. i doubt anyone treated slaves like family, but you're right, it doesn't make sense to beat your horse to death, it doesn't make sense to beat your slave to death either. i have a feeling smaller farms with poorer farmers were a better environment. but i'm sure teh abuse on large plantations was just as bad as history would have us believe

good post, but one of my favorite pass times is yelling out obscenities about yankee's. hell, most of the time i'm by myself when i'm yelling but that doesn't make it any less fun. now why dont you go back to beating up bums on the subway and eating philly cheese steaks :p

fyi, i was joking. i'm amazed this thread has stayed civil as long as it has an i dont want to be the one to start throwing shit around

i can agree with that. i'm sure there were plenty of extreme cases that are horrifying but i'm sure you're right about the people who think all that happened was whipping and beatings from sun up to sun down. i doubt that is accurate at all. and i do know that alot of slaves stayed after the emancipation, and a fair amount actually fought for the south (although, unless i'm mistaken i do believe they were offered their freedom in return)

yeah, i agree. there's a personality to the south you cant find anywhere else. and southerners are much more hospitable and polite than many northerners (notice i did not say all). my college gf was from ohio and she was amazed that guys go so far out of their way to open doors for ladies and walk them to their door at the end of hte night and still say ma'am and sir (to everyone, not just cops and your boss). but i dont know any guys who dont do that kind of thing.

VTDave's post was a good one, i just couldn't help but take a crack at a yankee :D

Anything having to do with racism is all created and fueled by the government and the news media the people controlling the government control. Its designed to keep the population devided because i divided population would not stand together and try to overthrow the gorvernment when they start doing some EFFED up shit like taking guns form ppl...

The conflict was primarily economic, and the Union played the "slavery card" in furtherance of its economic objective. Similarly: what the South called an attack on its "way of life" was really an attack on cheap labor and favorable export/import controls.

It comes down to the fact that during the mid 1800s, the North was a primarily industrial economy whereas the South was a plantation-based agrarian model. Under then present-day thinking, these different economies had opposite needs in terms of tax structure, tariffs, currency stability, etc.

Little did they know that NO ONE would win. All the Northern industrial jobs are now in China. All the agricultural jobs are filled by Mexicans.

Now, both our factories and our plantations are museums, just like the Civil War battlefields.

    So...damn...it was all for nothing!

I consider myself an American first and foremost I was born and raised and live here my ancestry comes second,I show respect to my country by flying ITS FLAG not my ancestors flag when in public or on my property,If I flew my ancestoral flag it would be placed under the US flag to show my respect for the country I choose to call my home. If I became a citizen of another country and went around flaunting my US flag over thiers it would be a sign of disrespect to them Im quite sure, the Constitution qaurantees the right to fly your flag but due respect towards the people, neighbors, and folks that welcomed new citizens here you should fly the US flag in public at all times regardless.

It's not just today. It's been since we came over from England. People for some reason think the color of ones skin makes a difference. Most people would eat a Red apple or a Yellow apple and think nothing of it. So Come off it!!
