Using a 4" grinder to cut filter open will leave fragments of outer casing and the wheel itself all over the place.

I have driven Crotch rockets for well over 6 years now and every time I buy a new bike I always break in the engine, never raise the rpm's above 6 grand for the first 600 miles than i switch over to Motul full synthetic, I just take it very easy for the first 600 miles, super bikes are very sensitive and fine tuned machine's.

that's a bad engine design - nothing to do with how it was broken in.

you redline it every day? why bother with the breakin then? i take it you're not planning on keeping the truck for an extended period? i'm not one to talk, i beat the crap out of my old mitsubishi truck - but that's how i drove in high school and college. my new taco will be babied and not driven like that for no reason.

someone i know had a friend that worked for mobil, and i remember them telling me that you shouldn't use synthetic oil until you have something like 5 or 10K miles on the engine as it will impede the breakin process. mind you, this is coming from the company selling the synthetic oil. just passing along what i heard.

Mobil's website says it's perfectly fine to dump Mobil 1 in from day 1. Your friend of a friend of Kevin Bacon is wrong.

I buy a few new trucks at work every year (not tacos), after many discussions we decided our policy is just to drive them normally but no towing until the after the first oil change. So far so good.

If the MotoMan is right when he says the first 20 miles are the most important in the hard break-in process, then I'm already too late. I got the truck with 5 miles on it and always drove it easy. But the sales guy did floor it on our test drive though, so maybe he DID do me a favor of sealling the rings?

quick question for you guys. I have 2300 miles on my 2010, planning a long vacation of about 3000 miles. Most get it changed at 3000, some at 5000, some even soon. Im leaning to getting my oil changed before I take off, just to be on the safe side. What would you do? wait? or now?

I would change the oil and get some better protection in there. The rings must be sealed by now. I changed out my break-in oil at 1800 miles.

None currently, but I would like a better sounding exhaust and perhaps a cold air pack and some color coded step bars
Certainly, its a good idea to change it before your trip.

If you do a lot of steady driving on your trip , it would give you a chance to monitor oil useage( if any), my V6 usually uses about a half a qt between oil changes...

Wow old post... yes I did plan on keeping it along time. Unfortunatly it got taken out at 41k mi by a high school chick running red.. oh well. Before that it was running flawlessly, in fact it was running so well it'd burn BFG All Terrain KO's punching it in second gear with no qualms about it. I did reg maintence, NGK plugs at 30k (ish), Castrol GTX Syntec ever 5k on the dot with a K&N oil filter, K&N drop in with a clean every oil change (or more if wheeling/dirt storm). Never had one issue, never saw one shaving in the oil.

My current one... doing a similar break in again...

I buy my vehicles to use them. My last truck had some AZ pinstripes... didn't bother me because I used it. It had power, I used it. I'm not afraid to drop 30k on a truck and use it... I didn't buy it to sit around look'n pretty. That's just a bonus. If something breaks, upgrade it. That's my motto.

Think I already responded to this but anyway as I remember with the old Toyotas for engine break-in , you go full throttle thru the gears a couple times to seat the rings....Always worked great !!!

I immediatly change all the fluids over to synthetic then for the first 1k I go a little easy with the high rpm's after that I just drive it normal.
