2.4L turns over fine, then dies

I have a 1996 Tacoma (2.4L 4-cylinder) that dies immediately after turning over. This started today, for the first time ever. When it dies, it does so very quietly. The check engine light seems to be on continuously.

A week and a half ago, I removed the EGR valve, pipe, and hoses to clean them. Then I ran some Seafoam through the brake booster vacuum line to pass smog, which it did. Ever since the engine has been running fine, absolutely no warning signs.

I backed out of the driveway today and it died. When I restarted it, I could tell it was ready to die again, but it lasted long enough to get back to the garage. Now it won't stay running at all.

I'm no mechanic, is the fuel pump functioning?

 

Huh, it almost sounds like your out of fuel. Maybe check for spark first just to rule that out all though it definitely sounds like a fuel issue.

 

I have over 3/4 of tank of gas.

Fuel pump maybe? Do these things die suddenly without warning? It's just puzzling how I brought it home last night running great, then today, it won't stay running to move 30 feet.

i usually suck at working on cars, so def keep me updated on what the problem was!

 

from what I know, fuel pumps usually die all at once. You can try turning on the key and listen for the pump by the fuel tank. I think it should make some noise if it's working.

Edit: never mind, I just went out and checked and mine doesn't make any noise with the ignition on. Im not sure how else to check the fuel pump.

You mean underneath where the bolts are, or the part that attaches to the hose?

By the way, all the vacuum lines appeared fine when I looked earlier. I will check again.

There's definitely fuel flowing. I put a plastic cup underneath, it was pushed back by the pressure. There was enough fuel present to fill up the cap of a plastic soda bottle.

 

Actually, it was a little more than that. Enough to fill the cap of a bigger Gatorade bottle.

I pinched the hose with a pair of Vise-Grips. On the fifth try, it stayed running, but was rough. I shut it off after 30 seconds. Then I removed the Vise-Grips, tried starting again, and it was identical to the sound recording I posted above. In other words, it died immediately.

 

Those were the words I was afraid of.

What am I looking at $$$ for a new pump?
