Cooks 1991 Toyota Supra Slow Build with Import Tuner BS

Well I'm not at all actually. May want to practice some a little prior to looking into this. I'll throw it on the back burner as there are more pressing things to get redone.

Have you replaced the shifter boot or the e-brake boot? That and the steering wheel is all that looks like crap now

 

What's next for the car?

I was actually looking at shift/brake boots earlier as I'll definitely need a shifter boot after the R154 swap (currently auto). I replaced the e-brake boot with one from EBay, but it was that PVC "Leather" and absolute garbage. It's too short or angles sewn wrong so when the e-brake handle is down, the "skirt" wants to pop out from behind the seat bolster. I've kept it until I can find something better. I was also going to try a local upholstery shop and see if they could make me a set from real leather. Let me know if you find a good one

 

Mainly get the truck finished. But for the car probably just some maintenance (100% fluids flush) and get everything working (driver seat, AC, cruise control).

I found something on eBay but didn't buy it because I just didn't know. Hopefully I can find something as I'd like to fix those ASAP ha. May have to take it to a upholstery like you said

 

I'm just the opposite, working hard to finish the Supra and put truck mods on hold.

 

Well for the truck I literally have rear bumper, rear shock relocate and box in the frame, and then some small odds and ends. But maintenance needs to be done first in new steering rack, valve cover gasket, thermostat, timing belt, new radiator, and possibly body busings. So hopefully within the next year it'll be done and I can start really messing with the car

 

For the shifter boots look at redline leather goods. The MK3 with the burgundy interior on their website is mine. Their boots are awesome quality, and you get a discount if you buy more than one piece. I don't have their steering wheel wrap, but it also looks like a really nice piece instead of those cheap autoZone ones. I will always use them for any future needs.

I want that exact car. Literally to the T. Though Id swap a 2j in it..but 7mgte is great. I had an 87. Wish I still did.

Not sure why it wouldn't have the r154 with the 7mgte. That was the standard tranny for that motor.

 

Finally have something that Monte wants It's still up in the air for right now as it's years down the road but for the moneys sake (right now) 1JZ but who knows I could come into a bunch of money in between then. Plus I need to research more into the swaps.

w58 was in the 7mge. Not the 7mgte. That said, yours is a swap...soooo not sure. Should be easy to tell though just looking at.

jz motors aren't getting any cheaper. Few years down the road a used one will be worth 5k. Since I've been watching they've gone up almost 1k in the last 7 years and that'll just get worse as time goes on.

I've been eyeing getting another one. But want one thats clean and doesn't need boat loads of work. They are old now so they always require work but wouldn't mind having one I could drive and tinker with and imporve vs rebuilting half the car. My 87 is still in my home town but last I asked what he wanted for it back was like 10k no way for a 7m. But likely won't get one for a while. Few nice 2jz swap ones have popped up though recently that were tempting..6

 

Oh mine was a 7mgte, he had a 1JZ swapped into it but due to the installer being a shit head it ran into issues so he swapped it back to the 7mgte. So my bet is it has the R154. That cleared up that little bit of confusion, sweet

Yeah that's also true but I can't afford 2 project cars. Once the truck is "100%" done I'll start ripping apart this more.

I'll admit, they are super fun to drive and I'm just trying to fix some minor issues which should be getting them all done (minus paint) within the next few months. Looking forward to a bright future with this little thing. I'll be sure to holler at you with any issues or questions as well

 

Yeah they are the perfect cruiser but fun to throttle around. Plus turbo nosies Great cars. Mine was a hard top, really wanted a targa for the mountain passes around here but pickings were slim. Was a miracle I found one locally as it was..

If it was a 1jz swap its definitely a r154. Bolts up to it unless he did a full tranny swap with it...which isn't impossible. Easy to tell if you even get underneath it though(not as easy on a car )

 

Love the turbo noises! Not a big blow off but it's still satisfying to do that. Wish mine was a hard top with the sun roof (just due to leaking) but I'm pretty sure I've fixed that.

Yeah it's tough to even look underneath, luckily my buddy has a 4 post lift so I'll be using that for a few things ha

 

Ooooo this is good.... Maybe I should ditch my Miata for one of these. . .

 

Changed my oil today! Holy fuck is it a bigger PITA than the truck. May actually go to my buddies next time and use his lift. Would probably take just as long. Ah well not for another 3.5k miles

Also finished up painting my “emblem”



Hope to be getting some interior pieces the next few weeks as well as the AC fixed in 2 weeks as I have an off day coming up

 

I always end up spilling oil everywhere trying to snake the filter out.

What kind of paint did you use? I was thinking of just getting a white touch up paint pen with the brush when I do mine. Yours came out great!

 

I actually couldn’t get the filter out it was too tight. So I’m going to buy a cheap tool just this once to get it out. I just used the “scratch” paint pen that Autozone sells. Figured it was easier to mess with.


Also it seems that the car is idling super high now that the oil has been changed. Anywhere from 2.5-3k RPMs. Idk why it’s acting so damn weird now. I’m pretty sure I didn’t hit any vacuum tubes or anything. Any ideas would be super helpful

 

Are you sure you didn't bump any of the vacuum lines near the power steering pump when trying to get the filter out? There's an idle up valve there for the power steering. Also, check your throttle linkage above the valve covers. There are some plastic bushing that can get worn or linkage could get gunked up and stick. I had a bushing on my linkage fail and when I started the car up, I pushed the accelerator and it went straight to the floor and wouldn't retract. Scared the crap outta me as it bounced off the rev limiter as soon as I turned it on.
