Yeah, it was for my wife's Escape which was parked behind my Tacoma in the driveway. Luckily a friend was already on the way here and took us to WalMart.

 

First time I'd ever bought it, honestly. I've always used Castrol, but the QS was $6 cheaper so I figured I'd give it a shot. Definitely will not buy again.

I am just busting your balls bud. My dad always hated Q-State and Pennzoil because he said "Q-State will blow your motor and Pennzoil will build sludge" so I have never used them because of that. I know it was from some issues from back in the 70's and does not apply anymore but it is amazing what you actually care about from your childhood. I used Valvoline Dura Blend for 150k in my 97 Tacoma and the oil was always clean when I changed it but have used Mobil-1 in the wife's 4Runner from day one and at 105k it still looks good everytime I change it but I buy that stuff at WM because it is so much cheaper than anywhere else. In the truck I use Amsoil well because like I said I am a brand whore when it comes to my truck.

 

Let us know what Quaker State says. I doubt it was their fault, more likely a WM customer who scammed the store.

 

That looks like moisture/water to me. Makes the oil look milky. Maybe it was exposed to many hot/cold cycles before it was sold. Hot Truck or Hot Warehouse to a Cold store? Just speculating since the jug was sealed.

 

Thats an old tweaker trick to get the oil for free. They know that Beatrice working the return desk wont open the jug to confirm whats in it. And if she does, wont know the difference. I used to run with some shady people long ago and saw it happen all the time. Never personally did it myself.

 

So what's in it? Lard/bacon grease, fryer oil, coconut oil?

Also, I appreciate the engine oil companies that DON'T use the stupid foil seals (like Pennzoil, which I use in all of my vehicles). I have had a small piece of that foil get loose while filling, which was followed by removal of a the valve cover and all appurtenances. Turned a 10 minute job unexpectedly into a 2-3 hr job.

Will do. Just figured if it was a scammy return, the jug would have been dirty or had an oily film on it. Wasn't the case at all.

Apparently Quaker's parent company Shell shuts down all customer service lines on the weekends, so it'll be Monday before I hear back from them.

 

Don’t send it back to them. If you do, you’ll probably never get an answer for what it is or what happened. You should take a sample and have it analyzed. I think the tests is cheap. I bet there is enough interest in this thread to drum up a few bucks in donations to cover the cost.

 

How would I go about doing that?

 

@jowybyo may have been talking about a place like Blackstone, but I'm not sure they'd be able to identify it. In order to run lab tests, you need to at least have an idea of what to test for, otherwise you're shooting in the dark. If it's some type of petroleum, you could contact an environmental lab and have them do a full test for TPH (total petroleum hydrocarbons), including oil range organics (ORO), diesel range organics (DRO), and gasoline range organics (GRO). A semi-volatiles test could also help ID the material if it has any hydrocarbons in it. Of course, the results would need to roughly match a known material in order to get a positive ID, which the lab might be able to do.

Going the testing route could be expensive and may not be worth it. If the seal was not broken when you opened the bottle, then it's probably safe to assume that the material is probably an oil production byproduct.
