Rear end clunk, DCLB

Update!! I completely disassembled and cleaned the leaf springs. I then straightened them within the retainers so they were not rubbing on the sides of the retainers, I greased all of the poly pads at the ends of the leaves. Then I torqued the U-bolts, But i left the 3 main bushings at the ends of the springs, loose. I then drove around the block, and the clunk was still there. I then torqued the main bushings and test drove again...the clunk vanished. Complete silence from the rear of the truck. My guess is the springs were binding before, exactly like @EatSleepTacos had said.

Haha that’s great!!! I’m experiencing the same thing now too. I run a stock TRD Sport . Would new leaf springs fix this??

 

You could try inspecting your U-joints, I had a clunk on take off that turned out to be a poor driveshaft angle as it seemed to torque the drive line slack. Carrier bearing drop fixed it. Another possibility is axle wrap? I'm diagnosing vibrations and chunks myself

 

He already resolved it. It ended up being the rear leafs binding.

Check your body mounts. If I was to take a guess I would say they are bad or collapsed.

These trucks are just noisy as crap honestly. Poor build quality on Toyota's part.

 

I would say no.... when my truck was stock it did it..... now running dakar cs047 springs and it still does it....

 

Well, The clunk is back. I will be going through the steps again soon, minus the spring disassembly. I will loosen the 6 bolts, Grease the pads and lube the bushings, and re-torque. Fingers crossed.

 

Had same clunking noise as OP when shaking rearend like his video. Just replaced my tsb leafs and add-a-leafs with Dakars Medium Duty El095R. Ride is firm and smooth, well controlled, not harsh, unlike before. Creaking noise backing down driveway is also gone. May have gained some in height but not much. Should have taken before and after measurements. Easy job.

 

Good to hear. My noise actually started about 5 months after i installed the same dakar leaf packs. They will creak eventually but thats easily cured by greasing the leaf pads. The clunk, unfortunately, came back after a month or two. Still unsure what is actualy causing this. ARB was stumped too, So they sent me a new leaf pack.

Old post..... but I'm having the same thing. Heavy duty Dakars. Clunk when the body rolls side to side. I've greased all pads, tightened the retainers and all bolts. I'm going to torque the bolts like mentioned above to see if it's leaf spring binding. But when I get under the truck and try to rock the truck side to side I can visibly see the leaf springs moving left and right. That's when the clunk happens. I offroad a bunch, tow a trailer, and have a Leer Shell. I think it may be the leaf spring bushings. I ordered another set from @HeadStrong Off-Road and I'll report back what I find. The clunk is super bad right now though.

 

I never did install my new leaf pack. But the leaf pack clunk has mostly gone away, however, I do still hear it from time to time. I will most likely get some deavers next.

 

Check where the leafs meet inside of the rear shackle. Had a clunking noise and found that it was the second leaf binding to the shackle itself. The second leaf extends into the shackle cavity itself. When it flexs it will hit metal on metal and that's probably whatnthe clanking noise is. I also have Dakars

That actually does make sense. I don't really hear it much anymore. But ill check for wear marks.
