Ive had same 'hunting gears' problem. Have taken it to dealership twice already since bought in June. Called Toyota and was advised to take Service Manager for test drive to notice problems. He felt the problem with an obvious missing feeling, and also hunting gears. Left for their top tech to examine problem. When they called at end of day, they told me that tech felt issues but just need to turn on ECT and run premium to minimize issues. IMO, the 'miss' happens at low rpm AND at highway speeds. So I dont think that is tranny issue. Curious if anyone else feels the miss, as well. Calling Toyota back in the morning, to let them know they need to address these issues instead of acting like they dont know about them!

ECT is for towing, and the engine isn’t tuned for premium gas. That’s a BS excuse if there ever was one.

Thats exactly what I told them! Funny that the dealer said they 'felt' what I was describing, but called it 'Normal operating conditions'. Sounds like CYA to me. Oh yea, wonder if anybody has the 'feeling of someone hitting you in the ass when stoping? Or slack in rear end? They called that 'normal', too!

Sucks for all you guys having issues getting your stealership to do the tsb's. Mine has never squawked at me about anything. They just do them. They did test drive mine for 0062-18 update and agreed and did it. No questions asked. Loving how it's driving even more now. Sorry guys. Just make them do it some how. ;)

On a recent road trip my truck would downshift on hills then sit in 4th on the top to downslope. I'd have to disengage the cruise over and over. Over 2,700 miles it was enough to slide the keys across the dealers desk on trade. Worst driving vehicle I've ever owned.

Remember: "Normal" and "acceptable" are two different things. Pintos normally caught on fire when rear-ended. The dog that lives above me normally barks like an asshole when his owner leaves. Neither of those things are acceptable.

It's actually a really weird position to put themselves in as a company. You are basically admitting that its normal for your vehicles to perform like shit...in an attempt to avoid fixing complaining customer's problems.

Yeah, I was told the downshift clunk is normal as well. When the Toyota engineer flew out to drive my truck for the rear diff howl he noted the harsh downshift. He said it’s a software issue and not something mechanically wrong. It’s just a bit annoying at times ha

I wrote about the harsh downshift in the survey. Never hurts to remind them about it ha

I would say YES to all, due to the fact that some people are having these problems. If Toyota decided to do a recall the dealer can inspect everything and fixed what is applicable.

Possibly Toyota decided to get off their tail on this issue with the introduction of the new Ranger. Personally I will always own Toyota but just sayin...

It's relevant because there are still a lot of people that think using 93 is better.
When it's just wasting money and efficiency if the engine is designed for 87.

Getting a dealer to admit the issue and properly duplicate the scenario of which the issue is occurring is starting to feel like I'm asking them for a kidney, they're refusing to go to the proper extent of going to at least a small incline or take it on the freeway to duplicate the scenario at which the issue is being reported is there anywhere in LA someone has successfully had a repair done for the ECU TSB? Even if it's a little out of Los Angeles I'd appreciate the input

Interesting you mention the Ranger as I will be driving one when they come available. The drivetrain in the Tacoma is awful. This should have been thought out so much better. If it worked as it should it still would be marginally acceptable. The powerband & gearing are so bad. Who tunes the powerband of a truck engine for peak power high up in the RPM range anyway! I love the Tacoma community, the looks of the truck & it's so called resale value which I may find out about within the next year. Really unfortunate.

Update: I just got the rewrite for the ECM finally, took only 300 extra miles on my truck to find a damn dealership to finally admit the issue and do the work. Going to be going back to pick up the truck well see how it drives I'm hoping I notice a difference on high altitudes at least. I don't want to be that customer but I'm going to be filing complaints to corporate for the dealerships who refused to address the issue initially. Best of luck to anyone else who is going to get the TSB ECM update

I really hope I receive this. In town, truck did pretty well but in cruise on interstate tranny was super buggy.

Just filled out my survey tonight. I'm guessing they sent it to me since I took the time to respond to a previous survey they sent me about a year into owning my truck. The survey said it was in reference to my previous one describing drive-ability issues.

Survey says... basically told them the hunting for gears & low power after coming out of a corner. Gonna look into the latest TSB from my dealership...
