Sorry if this had been asked a million times but I’ve searched and cannot find a definite answer. I upgraded my stock speakers. Along with a new head unit and amp. My question is can I just unplug the stock tweeters And leave the plug disconnected or do I have to cut And splice wires back together like I’ve read 2nd and 3rd gens have to do.

What size were your stock tweeters? I want to upgrade all of my speakers but I can’t find sizes for a 02 Tacoma.

I didn’t replace the stock tweeters but both the front door speakers and rear speakers were 6x8. I have an extended cab.

Thanks for the size help. Extra cabs are the best (just saying) . I just need the tweeter size now.

They just unplug, I had to unplug mine many times when fixing my broken door handles. I accidentally left them unplugged for a long time.

Yes, apparently the size is a myth. No one knows the exact size

Yeah I’ve taken the door panel off a bunch too. Was just wondering if keeping them plugged in would take power away from new lower speakers causing them not to perform as they should. I’ve since left them plugged in and everything sounds great. Sub goes in next

Little round speakers on the upper driver/passenger door panels. The later model 1st gens have them, not sure about earlier ones

I kinda want to keep them for the better sound range.

My 02 Extended cab has them on the top of the door panel.

You can simply disconnect the tweeter harness, and the lower door speaker will still work normally. I have an 02 Ext Cab TRD and just did this yesterday.
(I know the thread is old, just posting for future users with same question)

The reason the tweeters are mounted up high, and the reason they should be at that level (at least) is that sounds at that range don't travel off-axis and won't be heard. If you put in two-way speakers down below, the tweeter will not be as effective.
But component speaker systems are harder to install, and most of the speakers marketed to us are two or three-way.

I'm trying to figure out what to do with the speakers in the back of the xtra-cab. I had to pull my door off to repair the handle, and it got me to thinking about these things.

Are 1st gens restricted to a certain size of tweeters, or will I be able to fit 3/4" tweeters?

They might fit. I had to go a little bigger to get SI M25s in there, but they're 1" with a back cavity housing.

    Pretty well stock
In past few years I've replaced the sound system with a Pioneer unit and new speakers in the doors and rear side panels but I've not replaced the tweeters. The 1st gen tweeters are like pictured above and there seems no direct replacement.
They measure about 1-1/4" diameter with the mounting screw distance of 1-7/16". Do you think these would fit? I believe I could make them fit, but hope even though they're cheap they are an upgrade from stock.

Or these that are sold individually (kind of weird they aren't sold as a pair).

Does anyone have experience in either or maybe another option

Sorry to revive this but can someone advise. Is there a crossover somewhere that splits audio from the head unit to the bottom speaker and the upper tweeter somewhere? If I am upgrading with a speaker that has a crossover and a remote tweeter should i locate the stock crossover and replace it with the included one that the new Kickers came with? I am not sure where to even start looking for the stock crossover.
