Am I just looking too hard, or do the flairs scratch super easily? I took my fingernail to it to get something off, very gently, and even that scratched the plastic. Why are they so easily scratched?

probably a lot has to do with them being plastic and the additives just to get the paint to stay on, plastic is a lot harder to paint than metal. thinking of painting mine black anyhow, much easier to keep black than the painted color of the truck..

What's best to clean them? Even wiping them with a microfiber seem to cause streaks and scratches

I just use a microfiber mitt when I wash the truck and I used to use a product called "SLICK STUFF" as a detailing spray and we even used it in the body shop, but it's sometimes hard to find now..also Scott's shop towels are very gentle on paint.

What causes the plastic to scratch so easily on them?

IDK, maybe the plastic is just soft. I don't have an OR, so I couldn't tell you.

Hmmm. Guess they haved changed something. The flares on my 2nd gen still looked great after 10 years and 150k.
However, if you are bashing through the brush any will show wear and tear.

    All the things!
I wash mine normally with a car washing mitt and then dry them with a towel. After that, I apply 303 and they look great! Yeah, they scratch fairly easy, but no easier than they did on my Wrangler, back in the day. I think it's the texture that causes them to scratch easily. All of those high points in the texture are knocked off when you scratch them.

I havent noticed any scratches on mine. You can go over them with a heat gun or blow dryer very carefully and smooth them back out if the scratches are that bad.

My 1st gen's flairs seemed pretty durable. Now they fade and get white spots thanks to the sunshine state's ... relentless sunshine.

dunno if 3rd gen flairs are softer or not. mine are painted.

Nope, this one is brand new. Just found it odd how easy it was to scratch. Took my nail very very lightly and still left a mark.

What about darker black streaks? They dont look like scratches so to say, but black streak marks that dont come off. I tried getting it off and thats how I noticed how soft and easy it was to scratch. Also took a microfiber to it, and they left soft marks. lol odd

Maybe the Dealer put some kind of weird protectant on them if they have black streaks.

Maybe so. I just found it odd how easy it was to leave a mark on them, even with a microfiber.

I wipe my flares down with a spray wax/quick detailer anytime I wash the truck. Makes them look brand new everytime.

I use 303 on all plastic/light housing on all our cars and they always look fine.

I read on another thread that someone simply applied Rhino bed liner to them. Seems like a good idea.
