Dang! And the 2013+ have the ECU "fix" that is suppose to prevent/reduce this.

Can you describe your driving? Lots of short trips or mostly highway? In WV it looks like, so fairly humid a lot of the time?

I'm seriously considering implementing one of the bypasses before mine fails me a 100 miles from nowhere in the desert where I usually use my truck...

Well, I don’t drive my truck daily anymore, so it’s mostly weekends and fishing/hunting trips now. I did drive it almost 100 miles a day while it was my DD and that was all highway. Failed under both conditions. I’m hoping I just have a fluke, but who knows man? Both times it was in the summer, hot & humid.

For what it's worth, mine failed in February in northern Minnesota. Cold as hell and no humidity. :(

Thanks for the details! Hope it is fixed for good this time.

Thanks for the info! Unfortunately of course even if the air is dry as heck on one side of the valves on the other side of the valves (the exhaust side) it is always extremely moist since of course exhaust is mostly water vapor! Since you have a 2012 the valves aren't purged at shutdown so that moist exhaust is trapped and likely cold weather makes it more likely it will condense out onto the valves.

I'm hoping that my 2015 (which does purge the valves on shutdown) may fair better as it lives in a hot dry desert so the moist exhaust should get pushed out of there and the air used to purge quite dry and warm. Still, I'm watching closely for a reliable bypass for the 2015 so I won't ever have to worry about it!

I have 82K on my 2015, and I drive predominantly in the hot, humid South.

    So far, no issues.

I would like to remove the system however...

You don't need the letter for it to be covered.

Print out the one TRD-ED posted if you want. You shouldn't need it though.

If your rig is covered under the Warranty. You should get a letter in the mail. My letter just showed up in the mailbox one day.

Just had my 2012 at the dealer for this exact problem last week; P2440 and P2442. Had to have it towed to Albuquerque, which is something like 140 miles away. Luckily they confirmed the secondary injection system as being the issue, but they didn't have the parts on hand and they had to be ordered. I did get to drive a 3rd gen for a week as a loaner though!

I liked it for the most part. Definitely can see the difference in the technology that they have vs the 2nd gen. I really liked the updated interior with the new gauge cluster, along with the power sliding rear window and soft-drop tailgate. Unfortunately the power rear window is only available on double cabs, and there isn't a driver side grab handle. I still can't get over that front end either. The tranny(auto) also didn't like to obey manual shifting. Overall it felt different yet familiar compared to my 2nd gen. I'd own one, but I wouldn't get rid of my 2nd gen to do it!

I'm surprised yours failed what is your mileage? , I put the uni filter mod on mine but the original "filter" is ok, mine is a 2015 with 45k miles on it. I drove several 2016/2017's before I bought mine, I like pretty much everything except the engine and trans. Wimpy. Wouldn't shift right, noisy. Too many recalls.

I just received my reimbursement check in the mail. Took about two weeks. Toyota covered the cost of the valves in full. I did the swap myself so no labor or shop charges involved.

I purchased the valves online from a Toyota dealer, and sent in the receipt as well as screen shots of my original post here as a time stamp and mileage report.

I'm pleased with the outcome, but I'm worried they are going to fall again. I'm using the check to buy a bypass kit.

Hewitt Tech is in development of a full delete kit. If you email them, Becky will put you on the email list for when it’s released.

I got the CEL and TRAC lights, and the codes p2440 and p2442 which states the secondary air injection system switching valve stuck open bank 1 and 2.

I also have the support program letter from Toyota.

Went to the dealer and they said they ordered the parts and will do the repair tomorrow. They were great, and fit me into the schedule as soon as they could.

    Question:
Will they be replacing both “1 and 2” in the attached image? Or just “1”?

They changed both in mine. Did they offer you a loaner as they know it not safe to be driving in limp mode ?

No loaner, they cleared the codes and it drives fine now, the repair is tomorrow so I’m ok assuming it doesn’t fail again between now and then. I’m close to the dealer so not that big of an issue. Also I should note that I took it to a different dealership then the one I bought it from seeing that this dealer is closer to my house.
